Power steering fluid

Postby norbs » Wed Jun 21, 2017 9:41 pm

Would like to change the fluid and would like to know what should be used in the Gen IV GT. I see Dex III is recommended by many. But there are also specific power steering fluids available. What are people using?

Also, I'm too slack to look in the service book

Dex III is listed in the service manual.

If you're going to change the fluid, the best way is by the service manual.

Get yourself a 12mm pipe spanner and unto the two centre fittings on the steering rack and let it drain. This will empty the rack and the reservoir using gravity. Moving the steering wheel left to right will help push it out of the rack.
Reconnect your fittings, and fill it with fluid.
Fire the car up and the reservoir will empty so top it up before you damage the pump.
Fill the reservoir to "full - cold" mark and drive it. The notchiness will go away after the air is all evaporated from the system.
