2004 Liberty GT 170000km - any advice appreciated

Hi everyone,

First post here and very new to the purchasing cars process, although I've had a love for Subarus for some time

I'm very close to buying a 2004 Liberty GT and just had a few questions

The car has 170,000km on the clock. Interior and exterior are spotless. The engine is very clean. Full service history, always serviced by Subaru on time or even early. I test drove the car and it drove very well. The only thing was the handling may have felt a bit 'floaty', but it may be because I'm not used to driving this sort of car

Any thing else I should look out for/be wary of on this model? Any help appreciated

I'm also considering having a pre-purchase inspection done by RACV or similar, does anyone have any experience with this type of thing?

Cheers!

Get a pre-purchase inspection from a subaru specialist rather than RACV. (got it rex, HCW, revzone)

After 170kkm the stock KYBs will be pretty tired - I replaced mine with a set of shockworks, but there's plenty of other options.

There's lots of things that can go wrong, but at 170kkm, and serviced well and on time, it should be pretty good.

Welcome :)

Is it Auto or Manual?
With 170,000km on the clock I could almost guarantee the turbo inlet pipe will be shagged - generally causes poor idle and low speed (off boost) issues, Most of the issues I've seen are small - loose heat shields etc

Turbo inlet as in the inlet from the air box to the front housing of the turbo?

I would get a specialist check of the suspension if it feels floaty, maybe just shocks and/or alignment but also bushes get flogged out and may also need replacing.
Good info for bargaining the price of course.

Correct, particularly its the hose that passes under the intake manifold to the turbo opening, the hose gets eaten by the factory hose clamp, it's hard to spot on the car but it happens to almost all of them.

I have a long list of parts I've replaced on my mission to make my car feel tight (CV/driveshafts, Balljoints, shocks etc) just depends on whats been replaced and how well the cars been looked after. If you're unsure best to get it checked out.

As someone who just had an issue with this at 180,000 on a 2004 GT (a big issue involving a new turbo and a few weeks at a shop) I'd make sure you do get a Subie expert to look over it!

Welcome to the forum. I would recommend checking for wheel bearing noise during the test drive. Good luck.
