Engine gone, what to do?

Hi guys, yesterday my engine cut power whilst in boost, tuned for 17psi. Smoke blowing out of the back and no boost pressure after that and engine running rough. Thought it was the turbo, so took that off today and went to a turbo place and the verdict is the turbo is fine, and i would have popped a piston ring. So wondering if its worth stripping the engine myself and rebuilding it, or getting another engine. What are you're thoughts? Is this a common problem with the 20T's? Running with a VF34 turbo. Cheers, Steve.

If you know your way around an engine then there's no harm in having a good look, you need to know how and why it failed for peace of mind whether you rebuild this or swap it entirely anyway.

Is it possible to buy an EJ20, and convert it to a 20T just from transplanting from the old engine? If so can pick an engine up for half the price.

Doesn't sound like a great idea.

At the very least the pistons would be different and change the compression.

Keep looking for a turbo ej20, check gumtree as well. Eventually you'll find a good deal.

Did you have it tuned for the VF34?

To my knowledge yes.
