Gearbox blown :(

Postby Pete182 » Tue Sep 20, 2016 11:54 am

So it looks like the gearbox in my manual MY06 GT has gone to the afterlife.

My sister was driving it down the M5 tunnel when it shuddered and struggled to get to the exit.

So dad and I just took out the great box to find the insides all shredded so it looks like I'll need a clutch as well as a new gearbox.

Was just wondering what options I have to get this thing back on the road. Are WRX boxes and parts compatible with Libby's or are they no good? Any recommends brands for clutches? It's a 5MT and is just used as a daily driver, rarely driven hard.

Would a 6MT from a facelift/later model fit in ok? Or is there too much work involved?

Sorry, I'm not too good with the technical stuff.

Yes it will. I did a 6 speed conversion on mine. But it is fairly involved. You will need more than just the box and diff + shafts + clutch. I have a parts lust somewhere.

Thanks norbs. Would love to see the list to see if it's worthwhile. I always thought an extra gear on the freeway would make it nicer to drive.

I'm also thinking of doing a 6mt conversion. What's needed?

Oops forgot about this. Don't forget to do some research online. There are a few threads regarding 6-speed swaps.

Note that things will vary greatly depending on the donor car/transmission. Make sure to research thoroughly and pay particular attention to the part numbers. These are what I had to get for my particular setup:-

6MT, rear diff, tailshaft and rear drive shafts (front shafts fitted from memory) - This came with my donor tranny (from a SPEC-B)
Keep your 5MT neutral sensor switch, put it in the 6MT.
6MT shift linkage (Preferably Spec B; the Impreza shift linkage is shorter) (Is this still true for 08+ Impreza?) - This came with my donor tranny
6MT clutch fork - 30530AA050
6MT clutch release shaft - 30532AA020
6MT clutch slave cylinder - 30620AA172 - alternate:30620AA173
6MT clutch hose
6MT throw-out bearing
6MT rear transmission mount (same part for Spec B and Impreza) - This came with my donor tranny
Reverse lockout cable - 35060AG010
Downpipe support bracket - 44021FE030
R180 diff mount from the spec B - 41310AT040 (not strictly necessary, but click here for some info) - Came with donor tranny
Clutch fork shaft plug (threaded cap that holds the fork shaft in) - 30550AA000 for 04-07, and 11021AA010 for 08+
Output Shaft Oil Seal (oil seal for the driveshaft interface) - 806735210 - $11.50
Clutch fork spring (spring that connects clutch fork to bell housing) - 30546AA060 - $5.20
Inner shift boot (foam/rubber, mostly for noise insulation, you can reuse the 5MT if you trim it)
If you get a DCCD diff, you'll need an aftermarket DCCD controller. - I have non DCCD
Xtreme clutch, throwout bearing and flywheel. - I like Xtreme clutches but your choice.
Starter motor - 2L had a close mouth, had to get open mouth (could be the other way round, can't remember now).

As you can see it is quite a detailed list. I pretty much had ordered everything before ready to go so it only took a couple of days to do.

Best of luck :-)

Not sure on the 6 speed conversion however A few years ago I blew my gearbox in my forester GT, '99 spec glass box.

I retro fitted a 2005 WRX EJ255 gearbox into the car, I learnt a few things.

I ended up swapping the front and center diff and the front diff internal shaft (with worm gear attached) inside the trans, Which involved adjusting the front diff lash which can be all a bit too much for some people.

Interestingly enough when i had the 99 and 05 boxes in pieces i measured the gears, 4th and 5th are identical width, on the 05 box 1st gear, 2nd gear and third were 15-30% wider - you'll probably notice gear whine in 1-3 in the later 5MT boxes which is no where near as loud in the earlier boxes.

from what i've seen 2nd gear always gets it the worst, I managed to sheer every since tooth off 2nd gear by a moderate shift less than a week after changing the clutch.

The biggest problem you will have with swapping another gearbox from a different model in is the diff ratio's need to match, so you either need the gearbox + rear diff or be prepared to Frankenstein the new trans like i did unless its out of the same model.

Another thing to be careful of is some of the Liberty GT boxes used pull type clutches and some use push type, WRX's use a pull type clutch.

If you're swapping out the box you may aswell replace the throwout, spigot bearings, replace the rear main seal and inspect the clutch & flywheel.

I did a 6 speed conversion worth every cent - depending on how and where you buy it from it might come with a lot of those.

I have an R180 aluminium Diff mount if you want. I went with a beatrush by laile one.
