GETTING A GT :)

Postby LT5PLA » Wed Oct 15, 2008 9:13 am

Ok guys im getting rid of my 07 2.5i liberty and getting a 2004 LIBERTY GT :)
it has 81,000ks on it and its auto. a couple of questions

1. are the k's ok on this car? any problems with high k ej20t's??
2. stock qtr mile times?
3. i was thinking of just getting cold air intake, bov and a tune done to start off with, any idea on how much rwkw i would be putting out with those mods?

thanks for your help guys

My previous ride was the exact same car you are looking at. So this was my experience.
1. Got it with 73,000km on the clock, bottom end was replaced by Subaru Australia at 105,000km. Long story... there is a post somewhere relating to it. Not to scare you but this was my own experience.
2. Dunno, never tested.
3. I had a cold air intake and tune, no BOV. From memory... something like 150kw atw, HOWEVER different dynos, different readings, so another dyno read 136kw atw.

well i thought about turboing my 2.5i but then again i thought to myself i didnt want the hassle.... so i decided to look at trading it in for a gt... (still have not done it but the offer is there)

i test drove the gt and it is a much better drive than my 2.5.... i just want to get back into a turbo car and thought the liberty gt was a good choice... love the turbo pull, and with some slight mods i should be content.

i just wanted to make sure there are no common problems with the engines and high k's.. although 81,000kms for a 2004 is pretty reasonable.

Providing it's a pre August 2004 build & in luxury pack form Red Book states the following:

* Private Price Guide $26,100 - $28,800

* Trade In Price Guide $21,600 - $24,300

* Average Km 60,000 - 100,000

So to me, looks like your on the money in terms of what your buying - Just remember Red Book is only a guide :wink:

I wouldn't worry about higher Km's, it will come down to how it's been driven & how well it's been looked after. I've got a mate the has a MY00 Forester GT which runs the EJ20T & its done over 200,000kms. Heaps of mods, trashed everyday & he's never had an issue. So I guess that gives you a bit of an indicator as to how good the EJ20T can be :D

In terms of performance / power, Hot 4's project car is an MY04 GT. From what I saw last time they had done a TMIC, CAI & a tune (All AVO parts) & I believe it was running 150kw ATW.

I bought an 04 GT December last year - only mine had a mere 20,000ks on the clock so I paid a bit more than the "average" at the time. I have since put on over 20,000 in the last 10 months and loving it - plenty of highway k's and plenty more to come.

Mine read 123 atw stock on a couple of different dynos - one in Canberra, and the other in Qld. So that is a pretty good look at base power.

I went from a modded Foz [back] to the Lib and love the way it drives, it's got enough get up and go for now but when it's off lease I will chip it. The only thing I don't like is a fricken rattle in the back when I am on rougher roads, but I told my wife she has to sit in theback seat and source it for me or else ! :lol:

Probably the only real down side to most Subaru's is the rattles. Mine is 3 years old with about 55,000km's on the clock & it rattles like crazy. Especially with the gi-norma-gantuan sunroof in the wagon :P

Typhoon would be most good... But where the class!? & I hope you have a nice little bit of cash put aside from chopping through tyres :lol: Btw, are you also aware that Ford, as part of the scheduled servicing, suggests having a full engine rebuild after 120,000kms on their turbo models? That's why a lot of people who do big miles every year land up going to the V8.

Honestly, there is no need to be concerned about the Km's in a Subaru. Just make sure you get the vehicle checked out properly before you purchase & then do a full on service. Obviously having a full service history & all that jazz would be a big help.

Buying a 2nd hand car, you always take a little bit of risk (To some extent you do it when buying a new car to), especially when they're a few years old. But you've realistically got more chance of having issues with a Ford or Holden then you would with a Subaru.

Mine is just a vibration thing, part of the lining in the boot I think. My foz used to rattle heaps.

I used to get heaps of rattles in my MY05. Finally I got tired of it and threw out the rattlesnake living under my seat. Now the rattles are no more.
