Engine problems. Not sure what!! Please help

Postby ynerdem » Tue Sep 06, 2016 5:16 pm

Hi guys,

ive had a bottom end knock on start up with my 04 Liberty GT
someone has told me that i need an engine replacement but the knock goes and comes.
I am located in Northern Suburbs Victoria.
BB autos have been my go to so far and they have offered me certain options but just not sure what i should do.
Ive got a 2.0R that i drive around so im in a pickle with what i should do.

Should i sell the 2.0R and get a nice engine built on the 04 or get rid of the Liberty GT.

Ive been told new engine with STI block will cost me 4-5k
Or i can get a second hand one installed for about 3k.

Or should i get it fixed sell it and then go and get a nice MY11 WRX?

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Give me some advice please guys

trade in the gt for your desired wrx (don't tell them about the knock.) and if you really need the extra cash privately sell the other one.

Trade in on WRX sounds like a good idea.
CURRENT - ATP GTX 3576 - 22psi - 283.7awkw
OLD - Dom 1.5Xtr - Last dyno 254ahkw, previous 238ahkw, first 224awkw.

Depends how much you like your car.

If you like the WRX more then get the cheap option (or try ninja it past them) and trade it in / sell it.

Your best bang for buck option if you want to keep your Liberty for ages and are after some power down the track is the 207 short block ... will set you back about 6-7k as it needs a tune after install. May aswell get some basic bolt on mods during this period to make the most of the tune.

Read up on the EJ207's, and also whatever motor is in the WRX you're after and see if they have been having any issues etc

I was just in the same situation as you and have taken the EJ207 short block route.

These Prices are good! My 2008 2.5GT engine has just blown and I'm looking at 4-4.5k installed for second hand with anywhere from 5,800 - 8,000 for engine rebuild.

You should probably trade it in for the WRX before the engine blows and is worth nothing.

Whoever buys it off the dealer will be covered by a 3 month warranty - so you don't need to feel bad about someone else getting a bad car

Unless it's over 10 years old or had over 150,000km. Because in that case there is no stat warranty.
But it's the buyers problem to get the car inspected before buying.

It will probably be sent to wholesale anyway.
Used to work at a subaru dealership, no way would they put your car on their used car lot.
It would go straight to wholesale.

Personally I'd just swap a second hand engine into it. Some wreckers give you a few months warranty on those.
See how long you can get out of it.

I'd buy something like that for $1K and see if you can get a subaru mechanic to drop it in .
All up should be around $2k because it's easy to just remove and replace an ej20.

For example grab this and just use the shortblock with your heads:
