Turbo Replacement - Kinaugawa TD04HL-20T vs TD04HL-19T?

Postby jet111 » Sun Jul 31, 2016 8:13 pm

Hi All!

My turbo needs replacing and I am currently thinking of going the Kinaugawa route. It seems the most logical replacement with the least amount of fuss, which is exactly what I am after.

The car is currently bone stock - It’s a 2004 Automatic GT Wagon. I’m looking for a straight forward swap and I’m definitely on a budget!

I want a bolt on replacement but I don’t know which of the two turbos I should purchase. The 19T or 20T? What is the difference between the two?
I’d like to pull more power out of it later down the track.

I’d love to get a dump pipe and a tune all at once but that is a bit out of reach at the moment… I will add an intake pipe whilst I’m at it.

I have a few questions:
1. Do both of these turbos need a tune to run safely? Can either of them directly replace the current turbo without a tune?
2. Should I purchase genuine Subaru gaskets or are the Kinaugawa gaskets ok?
3. Are there any other supporting mods/parts I should do/replace at the same time?
4. Should I get the 19T or 20T?
5. Which intake pipe fits the best? I’d like to install it without cutting if possible.

Thanks in advance!
Mark

20t will flow about 15-20 more hp but add a slight amount of lag.

20t refers to the compressor wheel family. Ie front turbo wheel

With either turbo you will need a tune

If you want more power later then go the 20t

Get Subaru gaskets

Speak to jacksgtb for the silicon intake (kobe brand)

Whilst your at it, you may as well get a dump pipe made for it. Buy the kinugawa twin scroll legacy td04hla bell mouth and take it to any exhaust joint that knows how to weld and get them to make the rest f the dump pipe up

I'm looking at getting the 20t to replace the VF38 but can't seem to find it on their website or ebay anymore.

Can someone please post up a link to either?

I second this, finally got around to trying to source one of the 20t units but they've both disappeared from the Kinugawa website.

Anyone know where to buy them?

Only reference i can find online anymore is this New Zealand site.

http://drivenperformance.co.nz/products ... ade-turbo/

Even here they say that they're out of stock and are expecting more at end of June?

Got an email from them saying "not on our site currently" , but it has been there in the past.

Here's the ebay link:

This link is from another thread and looks to be active:

http://www.carmodsaustralia.com.au/twin ... 06-07.html

Can anyone confirm this is the correct unit for our cars? I've got a factory turbo that sounds unhappy, so looking to pick one up soon. Does it matter thats its a TD04HL and not HLA? Not sure what the A stand for :?

Also, ive seen on other threads that the choice of wastegate actuator spring is important, and they sell different springs (color coded) Anyone have any recommendations?

Yeah I'd also like some info of the letter coding as I've noticed both in an 'A' and non 'A' variant.

I also found the attached chart on Kando Dynamics. May be of use for some people.

Since the listing has disappeared off the Kinugawa site, below are the listings on the Kando site.
Kinugawa's prices are in USD and Kando is in AUD, so prices are pretty much the same post conversion.

TD04-HLA 19T - $1100 : http://kandodynamic.com/products/kinuga ... win-scroll

TD04-HL 20T - $1200 : http://kandodynamic.com/products/kinuga ... win-scroll

Hey guys, can anyone confirm that the linked TD04HL-20T is the bolt on (plus tune) replacement for the factory TD04HLA on the 2.0L Manual pre face-lift models? The website saya 2006-2007? Anyone thats done this mod, what actuator spring did you fit?

your in luck cause i just got my car back today and had the 19T put on.. basically it said bolt on but it was less than bolt on and needed an adapter for the oil feed which wasnt much only cost i think $30ish but everything else was fine...
i had it fit up to an avo dump which was matched for the vf38

i forgot to mention that i purchased mine form car mods but when they said 10 days delivery it turned out more like 3.5wks so just food for thought

Thanks simins. Do you have any idea what specifically needed to be done to the oil feed to make it work (part)? Also, did you install it with the supplied 1.0 bar actuator spring, or did you swap it out for a 0.8 bar or other?
