Urgent Assistance on Noisy turbo

Postby Libgtwagon » Fri Sep 19, 2008 7:17 am

Hi all
My 04 GT had started to let out some smoke (not too much) and I thought it was time to recondition the turbo. Car has 100k on it. So i took it too my mechanic to pull it out and went to MTQ Engine Systems that specialise in IHI turbo's. They said they could convert this turbo to a VF34 being a STI type and I said yes.

Here is the issue. From the second we cranked the motor, there was noise coming from the turbo. It was the bearings. I paid again to take the turbo out and took it to MTQ. They said they will change the cartridge. Well, guess what? After cranking the motor over again, it is doing the same thing. Noisy as hell. Paid the mechanic again and took it to MTQ and they blamed the oil that I need to change it and also the oil lines as they could have built up of sludge. My mechanic split the oil line in half and there was no sign of sludge. I change my oil every 5000k's.

So, this is the 3rd time now guys. Put it back in and MTQ came to my mechanic to hear it crank over, and the damn thing is even noisier.

If anyone can assist me with this, please guide me to the right direction. MTQ are baffled. I have lost alot of money and now MTQ are saying basically to put up with the sound or get a original turbo fitted back. "Bit unfair considering the money i have spent to make it a VF34".

If you read this Phat GT, the sound is still there champ.

Thank you guys for having the time to read this frustrating post.

What sort of noise is it? Is it the ball bearings, high pitched tinny rattly sound?

Its definately the ball bearings as everyone says this.

There is a high pitch sound on certain accelerations and the power is gone. But with the power, they are saying that there must be a problem with the tune. The PC was disconnected. It has been tuned by Pulse racing who did a fantastic job in getting 190kw atw.

MTQ head office in QLD called me today and have offered a refund along with the out of pocket expenses. As i highly respect and appreciate this, it doesnt fix the car.
Please help
