Inspecting MY06 Liberty GT STI - What should I look for?

Postby Silverwolf » Fri Apr 08, 2016 10:37 pm

Inspecting an MY06 Liberty GT tuned by STI tomorrow, for possible trade-in of my 2.5i

Frankly put, I'm an I.T. nerd, not a mechanic, and what mechanical knowledge I do have is limited. It's a sad fact, and something I intend to remedy, but it is what it is.

As such, I am here asking you folks - what should I look out for? What in specific should I check for as common issues? - Originally I was going to work on my 2.5i and basically use it as a shell, slowly building it into what I really wanted... but I've made the decision to go for something that starts a little closer to my goals, and so this new Liberty will be the one I stick with, and I want to make sure I spend (the majority :)) of my time upgrading it, not patching it up.

I realise this is a little late notice to be asking these questions - but better late than never :).

Everything.
The big one is headgasket - make sure there's no oil in the coolant, no weeping headgasket etc. Flog it for 5 minutes, make sure it doesn't puke coolant.

All the usual stuff

Exhaust manifold cracks, intake system hose splits / leaks (airbox to turbo inlet pipe to throttle body hoses).

Listen for any knock on cold startup. YouTube startup knock to identify the sound you'll be looking for. If you hear this, walk away immediately unless its an absolute steal of a purchase.

Intercooler splits / leaks, oil leaks from bottom side of the engine bay or the heads.

Good luck

Well it's been running fine so far :) - Handled a Mt Donna Buang without a fault.
