I can log/LV it in Melb.
You need to work out the budget between a rebuild/reco or short/long block swap.
I'm rebuilding a spare long for my car (bearings, rings, studs, master gasket kit, timing kit, head deck, set valves etc) for around $2.5k mostly DIY, self installed.

A new short is 2-2.5k iirc...

I know of a 150ish k prefl long motor going for 1.25k iirc.
All accs, headers but no turbo, lmk if interested.

Save heaps if you can live with a s/h donk...

My engine (04 2.0GT) knocks for about a second after starting occasionally. Is this a bad thing cos the engine only has 100,000kms on it?

Strangely, my wifes 04 Forester X knocks exactly the same if started for the first time that day and has done for 5 years now

What you describe is often the starter motor not completely disengaging after cranking.
I've heard mine do that maybe 3 times in 5 years. Not usually cause for YNANSB...

Sounds very much like the bearing knock my old engine had. And with the Forester, if the engine has been sitting over night, it knocks for about a second or so, if its been 4 hours since the engine has run, it knocks for about half a second.
From previous experience, a stuck starter sounds different, more of a whine
