Advice about buying my first MY05 Liberty GT

Postby SayWhat » Tue Mar 15, 2016 1:16 pm

Hey guys, this is my first post here.

I've been doing a fair bit of research and reading into Manual Liberty GTs and will probably be going to see one next week, as I'm considering buying one.

I know it has probably been asked a million times, forgive me, but I have absolutely no idea as to what to look for in these cars. I've never owned a turbo car, so I don't know much about them, mechanically.

It would be great if people can give me some advice or some tips and things to look out for when inspecting.

Also, is it true that a HD clutch can cause gearbox issues in stock GTs?

Thanks in advance. :D

Rob.

Abuse can cause issues in the 5MT - HD clutch allows you to abuse it more.

I had no problems with my 5MT at 180kw and 227kw atw

Fair enough. Thanks.
The reason for my question was because I read that a HD clutch will only be useful when pushing 185+ kw atw.
But otherwise on a stock subaru, it can cause expensive gearbox issues.
The car that I'm planning on inspecting has a HD clutch and a solid lightweight flywheel.

This is a normal upgrade on a car that has done the stock clutch.

There's a basic tune/maitenance FAQ in my sig, might be worth a look :)
Ej255 specific but most of it will apply to the 207...

I'd remove the tmic to see how much oil is in the tmic and throttlebody hose.

If heaps then walk, a little is usual...

Check for codes with BtSsm, Tactrix or Torque, etc.
Log and LV it with Tactrix or btssm...

Yeah, I had a quick read. Pretty good write up to be honest. I will definitely be looking to tune it if I get it, so it will be very helpful.

I think I have a handheld OBDII scanner somewhere. That should work for these cars right?

I don't think I'd be able to log it unfortunately..

Yeah a basic obdii will reveal cel codes if any.

As for logging and LV search for eg local Tactrix hire or checks on gumtree or find a member willing to help out eg myself in Melb. :)

Okay then. That's sounds good.

I'll have a look around and see what I can find. I'm all the way in Sydney but I'm going to see it next week so I've got a fair bit of time to find a friend of a friend that has a friend who has one.. lol

I know that the logs will tell me how the car is running and all, but I don't believe that I'll understand them much (I'm such a noob..). In this case, what purpose would logging and LV serve, while I'm inspecting the car?

Logging will show basics like battery, sensors, variable valve angles etc.
An LV summarises IAM, maf scaling, knock & fuel trims, it's all broken down in the FAQ as well.
So same, same but different.
Put them all together plus some basic inspection and you can get a decent idea of the cars health.
Does the car in question have a tune?
The tune is probably the most important aspect, if it's been modded especially so.

Okay, makes sense.

I haven't asked if it has a tune or not but will definitely ask when I inspect it. He said the only mods it has are a 3" stainless steel catback onto oem mufflers, adjustable sway bars, and a Defi boost gauge. He also replaced the MAF sensor and front shocks recently.

From that and a few other things that he said about the car, I feel like he has driven it hard. But then again, I don't have a problem with that, as long as he has taken care of it and not just abused it and neglected it. But I shall see. And hopefully, it will be the one. If not, then I'll just keep searching..

As long as the owner has his head screwed on right, then a modded car can be a great buy, as generally they're somewhat more difficult to sell as is.
But caveat emptor regardless!

Yeah, hopefully.

If I get it, then I'll post it and see where I can go from there in terms of tune and what follows.

Thanks for the info anyway, I appreciate it. :D
