hey guys need some helps sorry if ive posted this in the wrong spot.

so i just took my car in which is a 2005 liberty gt manual. and my mechanic said the funny noise im hearing is the start of my front diff on its way out. he said i have a bit of time up my sleeve before it goes so i need some advice on the best option. should i get it rebuilt, try and find a new one or is there some after market jobby i can buy. im not super worried bout money id rather get something thats going to last. also im in perth so if you know a good place to get it rebuilt that would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Cusco do nice diffs, and I believe they have a front diff suitable for the Liberty. Check with Garage88 (http://www.garage88.com.au), I know they're a Cusco distributor/reseller, I'm sure there are others too.

6MT manual conversion is the best way to get around this issue

Hey mate I'm unsure actually he just said it sounds like the front diff bearings going. It makes a buzzing whining noise when you lightly accelerate or put the clutch in when moving but doesn't make it when either the throttle is off or stopped.
Is it maybe worth getting it checked by someone else you think?

One might think that it would be a failing centre diff (in a manual) that would commence the generation of "funny noise".

Troubles of the differential and hypoid
gear always appear as noise problems.
Therefore noise is the first indication of
trouble. However noises from the engine,
muffler, tire, exhaust gas, bearing, body,
etc. are easily mistaken for the differential
noise. Pay special attention to the hypoid
gear noise because it is easily confused
with other gear noises. There are the following
four kinds of noises.
• Gear noise when driving:
If noise increases as the vehicle speed
increases it may be due to insufficient
gear oil, incorrect gear engagement,
damaged gears, etc.
• Gear noise when coasting:
Damaged gears due to maladjusted bearings
and incorrect shim adjustment.
• Bearing noise when driving or coasting:
Cracked, broken or rusty bearings
• Noise mainly when turning:
Noise occurs form differential side gear,
differential pinion or differential pinion

Hey mate yeah I'm thinking it may be worth taking to a specialised subaru mechanic as they might have a better idea it's making a whining buzzing type noise when I lightly accelerate or have the clutch in while moving but not when there's no throttle or stopped

If a bearing is on its way out, or anything else commencing to destroy itself, try dropping the gear oil and looking for debris or what is attracted to the magnetic plug.
If nothing, strain the oil and put it back in?
You have nothing to loose?

We suppose that the correct oil level has already been confirmed?

Yeah all the oil is correct all the gearbox oil has been checked aswell I'm gonna go take it for a second opinion and get them to drop the oil as per your suggestion could do with an oil change to thanks for your help

Pretty rare for the front diff to fail first. Not impossible, but it's usually the centre that goes first.
