Issue with acceleration.

I'm new here, and only recently bought my Liberty GT 2004 a few weeks ago, it was basically stock when I got it. Since I've had it I have bought a new set of wheels, I went from stock 17s to 18x8.5 with 235/40/18 tyres. It could be a coincidence, but since I've had the new wheels I've noticed a rather noticeable decrease in acceleration, Is this possible? Could it just be that the wheels are bigger and heavier, or perhaps the wheels are rubbing on the inside of the guards (though from the look of it I have a decent amount of space in there) It just feels overall a little more sluggish.
Any thoughts?

Yep, bigger heavier wheels can make it feel like the handbrake is on. Definitely not an upgrade.

Depending on the whee they could be lighter. What are they? A change in tyre size can technically make it slower to accelerate but I don't think it would be enough to notice

They are Rota G-force 18 x 8.5. Didn't weigh them but considering the extra height and a lot of extra width, I'd assume they were a bit heavier. Could be wrong though.

I'm pretty sure they're cast so would be heavier.

pick up my Lib GT 05 in 2007. I replaced the 17in with 18s no difference in performance at all. If there is a difference in weight it would only be 5 to 8 kilos. Same with my rex no diferance.
