I promise I'll stop being a post whore after this one

I'm still a little confused about what boost levels are safe to run on the standard auto turbo.

I was hoping to push it up to 17PSI (Which would be a nice gain), but I have heard that the auto turbo's don't particually like running higher boost. Have heard mixed opinions of this, I know some people have been running 17PSI +, but then I know some people have killed their turbo's running lower boost levels.

From my point of view, I need to keep the car fairly reliable as it is my daily driver.

One of my mates (VW driver ) mentioned that running a turbo timer may be a good option to give my turbo a little more life when running higher boost levels... Good idea?

17psi with a correct tune probably isn't too bad, you can pretty much tune it to be safe but whether it is still efficient at 17psi is something you would want to check into. Might just be blowing a whole lot of hot air.

Well once all my mods are installed I'm going to have it re-tuned (I'm running an ECUtek).

I'm not fussed if I land up running say 15.5 or 16PSI, not overly fussed on the numbers. But obviously if I can run higher boost & get more power etc out of it safely, then I would prefer to do that.

Were you planning to get that sort of boost through the tuning or through a boost controller?

Because with the boost controller you can set it to two modes, depending on your situation. My 'A Boost' is currently set to a little above stock, at 14.5 psi (1.0 bar). This is good for day to day driving.

My 'B Boost' is set to 17.4 psi (1.2 bar), which feels great but I only switch to it when I'm in the mood. The max boost level you can attain depends on the mods you have.

But just having the flexibility to switch between the two modes is fantastic because I too, am a bit uncomfortable running at 17.4 psi full time with the few mods I have.

However once you reach the level that Phat has in terms of mods, you can dial it up to a crazy 19-20 psi like he does.

It will be through a boost controller.

I'm mainly trying to get my info straight so when it goes in to be tuned I know what I can have done. I will probably have a stock setting which I will use in traffic etc, but I do want a higher boost set up so I can have some fun. Just don't want to push the evelope too much & cause myself problems.

Haha, Kosti. Not all of us have GenIII B4's to experiment with!

22PSI would be most good. But won't be game to run those sort of levels until I get a new turbo etc. Which may not be too far down the track if all goes to plan

So seriously guys, what levels do you think I can safely run on the standard auto turbo? I will be running a 2 stage boost controller, so will probably run on lower boost for everyday driving.

Err, I've already given my feedback and opinion. Anyone else want to chime in?
