Surging and pinging under boost

Postby Jake.h71 » Fri May 29, 2015 5:43 pm

Hey guys recently ran 95 in my 04 liberty for the first time. The end result I am now stuck with is surging and pinging under boost -.- I've never had this issue and am thinking it's either just bad fuel or possibly even spark plugs. Has anyone experienced anything similar or seen this happen before? I'm open to people's thoughts haha
Cheers jake

Drive to nearest fuel station, fill to brim with BP 98.
Disconnect negative battery terminal, hold down brake pedal for 30 seconds, reconnect battery negative terminal .
Crank and keep cranking until motor starts(can take a few more turns than usual) and let it idle for 5 mins.
Now you can drive but stay off high boost until you have refilled with BP 98 again.
Once back on 98 for a few tanks repeat the ECU reset process above.

I would actually advise against resetting ecu

Do everything else jslayz suggested above except ecu reset

Because the ECU will have already pulled timing on the knock events. Resetting will risk the engine knocking again. The ECU will gradually add timing back once it sees the headroom from the higher octane fuel. Yeah performance will be down for a bit but that's better than the potential effects of knocking.

If you read the owners manual you would realise it states 95 minimum......
And it wasn't so much a choice as we had ran up to echuca and ran low on fuel and turns out not all petrol stations run 98 for some reason -.-
I thought of possibly topping up with 98 and just letting it run it's course? And then reset the ecu due to it not needing to retard timing and boost?
Cheers for your thoughts guys

The owners manual also instructs you to take it to Subaru to change oil every 15,000kms

So would seem there's alot of things in the manual you shouldn't do

These engines are known to knock even on 98 fuel in stock form, so I certainy wouldn't chance 95 in there

Your choice but my advice would be to drain the tank, fill it with 98, drive sedately (off boost) til empty again, refill with 98 again and do not reset the ecu for reasons previously mentioned

Good luck

Thanks for you input mick, as I am new to subarus I am unfamiliar with the common issues and knowledge you present. In saying this I had already drained the tank and filled up with 98 the day after the symptoms occurred.

The pinging under boost is explained by the low octane rating but what could cause surging while spooling?

The pinging pulls timing erratically and slowly adds back in causing odd driveability

Havnt had the chance yet but I'm going to do the fuel filter and that should hopefully cure the surging and after refuelling with 98 the pinging has slowly stopped so hopefully all is well in the next couple of days

just keep pumping 98 into it every chance you get

then get an ECU tune
