Oil in the ECU // JDM ECU compatibility

This week our liberty gt went into limp mode with a DBW CEL (P02xx).

It was towed to S&J Automotive where they ran through the usual checks, cleaning plugs, trying a replacement throttle body actuator and pedal, etc etc.

After a couple of hours cleaning, testing etc, they went to replace the ECU with a spare. When unplugging the ECU, oil (literally) dripped out of the plug. Oil vapour had been sucked through the loom from the exhaust AVCS cam to the ECU.

They cleaned it up, installed an 06 gt ecu and the car has been running like a dream since.

This was the first time they'd seen this issue, and it's the first time I've heard of it happening.

I'm now on the hunt for an 04 gt ecu (5EAT), stock or tuned for intake and 98. If anyone has an ecu they want to sell, let me know.

Also, can anyone tell me if a JDM ECU would plug and play? I hear they have a more aggressive tune which would be nice out of the box. yahoo japan has a couple of cheap ones.

What's wrong with the ECU in it? also - just get a tune, don't swap ECUs to get a tune!

The ecu that was pulled out wasn't working. The ecu in it at the moment is fine, but it's a loan unit. I need to track one down to keep.

The old ecu was tuned for the car. The new one doesn't have to be tuned but it would be handy if it was.

I'm looking at a jdm ecu because they're cheap.

How did they install a new ecu and get it working without rekeying your immobilizer, key fob and biu?

Jarrod has a manual ecu for sale (cheap) in the for sale section which will work you just need to flash the 5eat rom into it

Cheers dr20t. I tried searching for ecu in the for sale section but the search failed (why have a minimum character length for searches?).

The key etc was recoded to the new ecu.

Update!

I bought a JDM ecu for $60 off yahoo japan through jesse streeter. It arrived in about a week from purchase. It was fitted and recoded with no issues.

However, it's 8 months later and the oil is back more than ever. After the last time, S&J unwrapped most of the loom in the footwell to minimise the chance of oil going to the ecu again, but now my passenger footwell has oil in it and my car is in limp mode.

It looks like there is a few tablespoons worth of oil sitting below the ecu.

I've opened the ecu and it doesn't seem to have any oil in it, so i'm using brake cleaner (then contact cleaner) to clean the loom and connectors a bit.

That is so bizzare.

The only way I can think of oil getting to your ecu is through the avcs solenoids / ocv valves. These feature a mechanical to electrical connection at the plug (and are often oily at the plug when going bad / worn). The shielded wire in the loom for the avcs might be weeping and thus allowing oil back to the ecu.

This is correct. I have 600 worth of cam position sensors on the way from japan.....still waiting..... to fix this exact issue.

It's going to keep happening until you find and fix the cause of the issue, most likely from where a sensor is open to oil pressure. As the harness warms up the oil is warmed within it, pushing its way around. I would be replacing the entire engine harness aswell.
