2004 EJ20X rebuild

Postby Mr.TT » Tue Dec 23, 2014 2:28 pm

Hey guys,

Just wondering what would be needed to rebuild a ej20x that's done 214 thousand km on it, want it to be able to handle more power and more boost and more reliable but no idea what would need to be done and what parts would need to be changed and what not, any help would be appreciated guys. :)

180kkm EJ20Y here - considering a headgasket job and studs to support up to around 250kw on E85 reliably - There should be no real need to crack open the block unless you're chasing mega power or something has gone wrong.

Maybe head porting while they are off?

The Bottom end of the EJ20X/Y is pretty strong by all accounts, it's the headgasket and bolts which are the weak link.

thats the thing i think something might be wrong not sure, so was wondering if someone could supply like a list of things that would need to be changed for a full rebuild, at 214k i dont think just a head gasket and bolt changing will secure me 250+ awkw will it lol

What do you mean "something might be wrong" - what do you mean when you're talking about a full rebuild. You can go absolutely crazy and get new pistons, crank, rods, 14mm headstuds, ported heads, new cams, other supporting headwork.

A bottem end rebuild doesn't net you any real performance gain worth noting as such, it just makes it stronger. (unless something is wrong) That said, if it'll do more rpm because of the components, that might equal more power as long as the head flow is there.

If you're getting a lot of blowby you could just do the rings. You need to be more specific about what youre goals and problems are here, but based on my research, as long as there's nothing wrong with your bottom end, a simple headgasket and bolt change (on an EJ20X/Y) will do 250kw pretty reliably.

Deshele destroker:
Ej25 / 75mm DE-STROKER 2.356cc
fully forged short motor inc fully closed deck block. Light weight rotating assembly to suit high rpm power, 14mm head studs, high volume oil pump, all machining done and assembled.

great for people loving the 2ltr rev but with bigger cubes to help with torque and broader power delivery.

Not worth rebuilding ej20y/x

Grab an ej207 or deschelle ej257 destroker (ej257 bore with shorter stroke) with your z20 ej20x/y heads on there that have had combustion chambers machined to suit the 99.5mm bore of the 2.5 pistons

THIS. Perfect.
If you plan to keep this car i say this is the route to go. The 207 is the easier route
