Ways to get 300hp (225kw) at the wheels for 5EAT

Postby phly » Thu Dec 18, 2014 11:00 am

Hi guys, just wanted to discuss and see what ideas people have for cracking the 300hp (225kw) at the wheels figure for a 5EAT.

For this discussion it would be nice if the ideas catered for the following criteria:
1. Car would still be good as a daily
2. Quick spool for drivability, being a 5EAT would probably never see past 4500rpm (maybe preferably staying twin-scroll, also helps for point 6)
3. Use normal 98 octane fuel
4. 0-100km/h in less than 4.7s (or maybe just under 5s if 4.7s is too optimistic)
5. Quarter mile in under 13s (could be too optimistic here also)
6. Minimal modifications (or as few parts required to purchase as possible)

The criteria and ideas above might be a bit whacky or contradictory, so happy for people to discuss if anything is not possible. Maybe more than 300hp is required?

IMO specific power figures are a silly goal to strive for, especially on your 2.0 with a preFL 5eat on 98 petrol. The only way to make power in your scenario is to upsize the turbo, and that pretty much means less drivability and slower spool since you're not using e85. The only thing you have going for drivability is the twinscroll aspect of your plan.

Either way, read these.

Both guys have done what you want, the latter is a manual (take off 20kw for a 5eat). Both setups are basically what you're after and both setups went bang after a year (yours doesn't have to, but it just shows how close to the limit your goals are).

To give you and idea on spool - Kiahatsiu's 2.0 was spooling around 4000rpm iirc? On the same turbo my 2.5 spools at 3500.

Another thing to note - your gearbox isn't weak, nor does it limit power. What it will limit is - drivability with a big turbo. Turbo needs revs and cubic inches (and E85 helps) to spool. The combination of 2.0L, big turbo, 98, wrong gear (preFl tends to sit in 4th/5th, you can manually shift down or put your foot down and count to 2 for it to get into the right gear) is going to feel like a corolla while in Drive mode. Unless you're manually shifting, you also run the risk of the boost coming on very hard - not very predictable, pleasant or safe.

If I was you I'd aim for 200kw with a decent turbo upgrade and supporting mods. IMO the most results for minimal spending.

Why not begin with some supporting mods for the stock turbo, eg tmic and or waterspray, fuel pump, 3port, 3" tbe, inlet silicone and a tune. Properly sorted, the extra torque should feel like 225atw. Then you can consider more fueling support and eg a turbo capable of providing more flow with similar to stock spool. Eg 380xt, avo380 or 400s, bnr16g or 18 etc etc.
Or go nuts with a rotated or low mount BW efr...

tprenshaw's setup would also be ideal. Made 216Kw on 16psi which is damn close to your goal. DR20T's old setup also made similar power on 98 fuel so I would also be looking at a GTX2863R as 18psi would make it a weapon.

At the moment ive got the 3" tbe done and a PW top mount waiting to be installed soon. After that i'd be looking at a tune to see how its going.

I'm starting to look at turbo options as well and want one that would have the capability to get to about 300whp.

Call me crazy but im just looking at getting the car to a level thatll be faster than a stock CLA45.

stock motors just give way over 200kw......eventually
CURRENT - ATP GTX 3576 - 22psi - 283.7awkw
OLD - Dom 1.5Xtr - Last dyno 254ahkw, previous 238ahkw, first 224awkw.
