Turbo upgrade for JDM 2.0 LGT

Postby sleepr » Tue Dec 09, 2014 6:24 am

Hi there, new to the forums, I posted on legacygt.com and a member there pointed me to this forums for the JDM legacys.

I have a 2004 JDM LGT Manual with TD04HL-19T, and the mods I have are a turbo back exhaust with a aftermarket downpipe and a AEM panel air filter. Just had the injectors, sparkplugs (standard 6k heat range), new standard clutch and flywheel done not so long ago. I had a road tune done by a tuner here in NZ and the car has about 240-250hp atw. I would like to get to 300hp atw. The tuner recommended going VF36 or VF37, along with 7k sparkplugs, fuel reg, and the sti jdm intercooler. Didn't mention about the headers or downpipe.

I am bit confused on what bits are actually needed to convert from my TD04HL-19T TS to VF36/37 TS.

Do I need to change the following?
1) Headers?
2) Downpipe (already have a after market downpipe which is on the 19T and FGK exhaust currently), will this need to be changed?
3) Intercooler, I believe I have to get the sti tmic or just go FMIC correct?
4) Fuel regulator or upgrade injectors? I believe the factory standard on the JDM's are 550cc, they are the blue injectors.

Blue side feeds are 520cc. Get a pressure regulator and run 60psi rail pressure

Did 223Kw on a TD04-20T recently on 16psi at peak power(they dont like big boost up top, let the WG flow air and they make stupid power. VF36/37 will struggle to get there plus you lose a lot of low rpm torque

Other option is getting JDM twinscroll GDB headers, an ATP GTX2863R and make 250Kw on 16psi

Wow 223KW, is that at the wheels or engine? What other mods have you had to do? Are you on the standard TMIC?

I made about 180-185kw atw with the standard tmic, full turbo back exhaust and a aem panel filter, and peak boost was 1.3bar which is about 19psi, but it goes down to .92 bar (13psi) at redline in 3rd gear. So really keen to know your mods on how you got that power at 16psi. Did that turbo pull all the way to redline?

Yes, pulls all the way to redline. Had 18psi at 2800rpm so the torque curve is extremely wide. PW TMIC was about the only other difference to yours

Awesome news Kido, you are the man, I have been thinking about going the PW tmic as well.

Few more questions:
1) Did you have to upgrade the injectors or fuel pump, or did you just get a fuel reg?
2) What heat range spark plugs (6k standard or 7k)?

I recently got the standard blue injectors, 6k heat range sparkplugs and the standard fuel pump done to the car as it had done 150,000km's. I don't mind changing the sparkplugs but don't really want to change the fuel pump and injectors unless I have to. What would you recommend?

As matt suggested, get a fuel pressure regulator, and run 60psi to up the effective flow of the stock injectors.
A basic Tomei , Sard , Turbosmart FPR800 etc type reg will do on the stock setup :)

Fit FPR
Run 45psi at idle with vacuum port disconnected, puls down to 36psi at idle with vacuum hose connected
Drive to tuner, bump FPR up to 60/51psi at idle
Rescale injectors from 520cc to 640cc. Tuner adjusts injector latency by 93% of stock

so would better FPR and jdm blue side feeds be enough enough to support a td05 20G twinscroll?

Iirc the fpr upgrade on stock injectors provides headroom for around 200atw.
So with that turbo you would be boost limited, then injector limited. IMHO :P

It's an easy/low hanging fruit/path of least resistance upgrade to provide headroom on the stock injectors... And stock block etc...

Im already on a forged block so it should be able to take more boost as needed, so back to injector limited :) ?

Yes :)
Pump and injectors, then rails, lines, surge tank

Been running on the Autosport dyno with 195Kw on stock injectors with 95.4% IDC. 95.4% of 520cc so with rescale for injector flow, went to 76% so has around 32% more fuel flow capability or around 255Kw potential

Correct me, but realistically, 200-220 max leaving a little headroom on the table?
I don't regard maxing every parameter or component as being conducive to long term reliability. :P

Its why I capped it around 90% IDC on the FPR modded injectors for the 233Kw

Looks like I won't be going the VF36/VF37 way nor the Kinugawa way. I got hold of a VF38 twinscroll and gave it to a turbo expert to fit a td05 16g or a 18g in it. He reackons with the 18g it will be around 550cfm which is quite a lot more than VF36(which is 460cfm). I am yet to decide which one to go with 16g or 18g. Not much difference in both, maybe about 30cfm.

My goal is 223kw (300hp) at the wheel. This turbo should do it, but what mods do I need to do?

1) Trubosmart FPR800?
2) I am still on stock intercooler, thinking of either avo or process west, suggestions?

Will be getting the avo induction pipe and the maf pipe to fit the turbo inlet which will now be 3".
