My 05 Liberty GT, suspected blown gearbox need HELP!!

Postby Jap_spec » Sat Oct 18, 2014 11:07 am

Hi guys, I need your advice!

i was driving on highway with cruise control, when I het a slight hill the car struggled maintain the current speed.
At the time I didn not think it was a serious issue but while car was struggling I heard unusual whining noise From the gearbox.

So I took the closest exit come off the highway, stopped at the set of lights. But when I try to take off from the lights the car would want to go no more than 20-40k/h gear is engaged but it's just not revving, when I stopped the car nearly stole itself full on knocing noise etc. but when I put it in the neutral the car revs fine nice and smooth.

When I checked the atf gauge it was little bit low but I got it serviced like 4 month ago.

Does anyone. Here experienced the similar things?

Also does anyone recommend a good auto box shop and tow truck ppl from brisbane area?

Thanks in advance!!

When you say the gearbox was serviced 4 months ago, do you mean fluid was flushed

If so, and if they didnt do a power flush, then this may have caused your problem as gunk that was otherwise static in your fluid somewhere has now become lodged in your valve body when they dropped the oil.

Its hard to explain but basically any excess gunk that was in your auto trans fluid was not causing any issues but when they dropped the oil through the pan, its found its way to the valve body

Or you could've disintegrated your centre diff which explains the clunks and noises

Does it do the same in reverse? And what about if you manually pick 2nd gear and try take off?

Thanks guys for reply.

No lights in the dash at all,
I have bit of movements in reverse and forward. Also tried to use manual mode, it does work and changes gear but when I select higher gear it still wouldn't go any faster.

When I went to the auto box specialist to get the service, they flashed the oil with no power tool, they took out the pan and cleaned it, change the internal atf filter but NOT external one.

When I drive it it Was ok and but it started to slip within couple days. It also went away after 2-3 days after.
Fluid is little bit low so might add more fluid until it's full.

Does anyone know what fluid should I use? The supercheap guys recommended the nulon 4/5 speed atf oil. They told me they did looked up in their system and told me that this atf is for my car. When I read the description of this atf it says this atf is for all 4/5 speed auto gear box. I dunno if it is ok to use or not.

They should've changed the ATF filter

Use penrite ATF FS (full synthetic)

Top it up and see how you go

Hi guys,

Just a update of what happened to my car other day.

So I got my car towed to the gearbox shop they had a look at gearbox, they said it's not the best condition but it's ok, they did couple little things just tidy up a bit. But the other main issue was the boost leak and throttle actuator /throttle position sensor.

They run the obd scan and he told me there was nothing but when my mate connected to his laptop with flash tune program thing it come up with the error code for the throttle position sensor and actuator.

So, thanks god it was not the gearbox but now I have another problem.

Oh and both of my rear doors won't open now with the remote keys. Haha what a week...

Thanks guys for help!!

The rear doors will just be gummed up actuators, really common and I think there is a how too thread for taking them apart and cleaning if you do a search.
As for the throttle position sensor problem, have a look at the plug at the back if your throttle body, mine used to get oil in it from a leaky TMIC to TB hose, this might be where your boost leak is coming from too.
Get yourself a can of contact cleaner and spray the shit outta it along with your MAF sensor while your at it.
Good luck.
