Liberty gt 2.0 LT grinding sound

Postby snowizzlebrizzle » Tue Sep 23, 2014 9:06 pm

Hey guys new to the page.
My liberty gt 2.0L turbo auto has a funny sound
In the lower rev range when I accelerate a little harder.
It's a winding grinding kind of sound and goes away once
The revs get past 2500rpm. (Roughly boost)
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers, Tim

Where is the noise coming from, chances are it could be a wheel bearing that's worn out. I had similar noises from the rear end not so long back

It sounds like front right but that could just be driver position.
Wouldn't bearings make a sound all the time ? Or is it a rev frequency thing?

Does it go away when you're not moving but rev it? Perhaps a vid

Yeah there's no stationary sound at all
It only happens when I'm moving and place the car is
Accelerating from a lower rev range

Think you'll find its highly likely to be a bearing hub assembly. Be prepared to bend over if youre not confident to do it yourself. Pretty easy job

Wheel bearing will get louder with speed not go away

Best way to test is if the noise goes away when turning right or left

If it goes away when turning right, its the right wheel bearing

If it goes away when turning left, its the left wheel bearing

Once i got above 40km/h mine stopped making noise, that i could hear anyway. The other check is jack each wheel off the ground and see if it wobbles. Good luck

I doubt its the wheel hub assembly, it would get louder and be more consistent as you increase your speed. Let me know if you find out what it is though because I have the exact same sound and I can't figure out what it is.

Just in case anyone is interested: my MY04 GT had a really similar sound - faint scratching/grinding noise only at ~2500rpm when boost came on and only at ~1/2 throttle. It was driving me nuts but I mentioned it when I was getting it serviced just recently and the guys did a smoke test and found it was a boost leak at the throttle body. Totally fixed it, the silence is blissful!
