Spraying intercooler black helps against heat soak ?

Hi all, just came across this mighty car mods video on youtube and wanted to see what everyones opinions were.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1QL9veQ ... q9Ga8W2J3A

Basically in this video they test intercooler temperatures of a shiny intercooler then spray it black and test the temperatures again.

The most interesting part of this video that I think will apply to alot of us Liberty drivers is that spraying the intercooler black will help drastically against heat soak considering most of us would be running top mounted coolers.

Edit: I've just seen this video which suggests the opposite.

Both pretty interesting to watch.

On one hand you have mighty car mod guys and on the other you have an engineer and every single car manufacturer ever.

Just from that you can figure out which one works best in all conditions ;)

Nothing wrong with the MCM experiment, they just misinterpreted the results.

A black intercooler will work better at idle, unpainted will work better during driving. Which one would you prefer?

Considering both will get heatsoaked - the black doesn't prevent it at all - would you rather have more cold air/power/safety during driving or at idle? There's your answer.

What alexei said.
Also, the the MCM guys tested based on front location and not top. The radiant heat from the turbo isn't taken into account; and unfortunately, the black is only going to exacerbate the heating effect.

If you want to do something worthwhile to your TMIC to prevent heat soak:

- insulate the turbo and DP as much as possible to hold the heat in
- insulate the TMIC end tanks as much as possible to reflect the heat from the turbo; here's what a buddy of mine has done to his engine bay with heat shielding and heat reflective tape to his SH Foz with PW TMIC:

Yes it's a black TMIC, which is why he's gone to so much trouble to combat heat soak...

All that and a cold side temp probe ($25 eBay) and a waterspray with or w/o intelligent controller and manual override :)

Paint or anodized ?? very big difference

how significant was the difference between painted and bare evaporative cooling at speed though? 97 to 100 celcius? seems almost negligible

Was thinking of painting a fmic black just to avoid attention
