MY05 wagon blown engine options?

Postby Nosf3ratu » Mon Aug 18, 2014 4:06 pm

Hey guys,

Was recently pulling up a hill and heard a loud knock followed by oil and coolant all over the road. Had it towed to the local Subaru specialist here in Hobart and they barely had a look before telling me the whole motor would need to be almost completely rebuilt and for them to do it would be around the $15k mark . A quick search on here pointed me in the direction of Rising Sun to enquire about an EJ207 long block. I'm yet to hear back so I'm chasing the opinions of those with more experience in the mean time.

I haven't got a full report from the mechanic but from what they said over the phone the short block, heads, gasket kit and turbo were all needing to be replaced at a minimum and that was without having a proper look for anything beyond that.

So, what are my options? Is a long block EJ207 the best way to go?

*Edit - More info*
It's manual.
Budget is pretty tight, would prefer to do it for under 8k.
In terms of power goals I'd be more than happy with 200 atw, not after huge amounts of power.
Car was purchased second hand and to my knowledge has never been tuned or modified.
The mechanic gave very little information, basically said they had a brief look and it was still spewing coolant and oil everywhere and they would need to rebuild the whole lot, sounds like they're either trying to rip me off or just aren't interested in the job. Still waiting to get a report from them with the specifics.

Sorry to hear about your engine!

The advice I'd offer is this - firstly find out what actually went wrong.

If what you posted is really what this mechanic said - it doesn't make much sense. Replace the heads and the turbo AS WELL as the short block? Why? Usually a problem happens in one area of the engine, not all three at once.

While it is possible that you had some sort of freak engine explosion that affected the entire engine bay - it's sounding more like you're getting ripped off for 15k.

Perhaps let everyone know if your car is a manual, auto, what your budget/power goals are and who your current tuner is.

Good luck!

For 8k you can have a complete ej207 version 10, fmic or better TMIC, bolt on twin scroll 45lb/hr turbo (gtx3071, td06-20g etc), arp headstuds, injectors and fuel system and retune

On 98 fuel this will make 250awkw or on e85 300 plus depending on turbo and fuel system you choose

Tell your mechanic to find a new profession or another sucker to fleece

Thanks Mick, I've been reading over a few of your posts and was hoping you'd reply. In your experience what would be the most cost effective way to get up and running again? If you could explain it too me like I'm an idiot that would be even better. $8k would be my upper limit, is Kris at Rising Sun still my best bet?

My advice (which is basically what Mick told me to do with some slight variation based on your power figures that I think would work):

- Call Kris, and abuse him (in good jest, he's a top guy to work with and will go out of his way to help you out) until you have a GRB JDM STi EJ207 long block in your hands (or on a stand...but in your house); make sure he sends you the headers, up pipe, down pipe and TMIC
- In the meantime, go to another mechanic.
- Acquire a Blouch DOM X.5XT-R Twin Scroll, 1000cc top feed injectors (STi engine is top feed), DW65C fuel pump; EDIT: forgot head studs...and get Kris to order new OEM head gaskets too. The Tomei ones are good, but a stupid price
- Install and tune and BOOOOOST!

You want to stay with a twin scroll setup, it's mad!
