Turbo Upgrade / Replacement (MY04/05?)

Hi Guys,

Just a quick prelude, my LibGT's stock turbo has decided to die on me. I knew this was coming as my car is around the 170,000KM mark, so a fair decent job I say. So I am looking to either replace or upgrade. I'm more leaning towards upgrading, nothing silly, but just something with a tiny bit extra.

After doing the research rounds, I am still a bit confused as to what turbo setup I actually have in my car.

My rego is a MY04 with the manufacturing date being 07/2004. However my vin is JF1BL5KV55G009139 indicating it is the BL5 (2005) model correct? Why are there discrepancies with the JDM cars or do I have nothing to worry about?

Details:
VIN: JF1BL5KV55G009139
APPLIED MODEL: BL5BKBV
ENGINE TYPE: EJ20XDLBJE
TRANSMISSION TYPE: TG5C7CWAAA
MANUFACTURE: 07/2004

So short of ripping out my broken turbo I can assume that the turbo setup is a VF38 correct?

I have taken great interest in a thread started by Archie01 (http://forum.liberty.asn.au/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=26021) in regards to a very similar situation where he was only really looking for a bolt-on turbo without having to do any major modifications to piping etc...

From what I can gather from who I have spoken to and what I have read, the Kinugawa TD04HLA-20T GTX (http://shopping.kinugawaturbo.com/kinugawabilletturbochargersubaru06-07legacylibertytd04hl-20ttwinscroll.aspx) will be a direct swap for the VF38 minus a couple of hoses which are easily changed.

So questions are:
- Will this turbo bolt straight up to my existing setup?
- What modifications are required (if any) to fuel system, TMIC, exhaust, etc...

Remembering I am not looking to produce a million HP, just a slight upgrade with minimal fuss. I will also be getting the car tuned after the new turbo is put in.

Thanks guys! :)

PS - If this turbo is indeed a fit for my car, I will be happy to compare my friends stock LibGT (same as mine) on a dyno to the potentially upgraded TD04HLA-20T in my car :D

Hey mate

Yes the turbo you linked is a recently released upgrade (only ones ever made) that bolt straight onto the lib my04-my06 Gt's.

Oil and coolant lines need some fiddling but apart from that bolt on to stock everything from what I see

I would upgrade the fuel pump while you're at it (unless you're certain it's been replaced since new).

Will be awesome to see a comparison between this and a stock huffer

That's awesome that you have done all that research for me!

I'm in the exact same situation with my 04 liberty GT. Mine has done 198K's and i have had it since new. I have given it a bit of a hiding over the years so I 'spose I cant complain.

Question: When do you plan on ordering the TD04HLA-20T? Do you have an idea of the freight to Aus (Melbourne)??

I plan on ordering the TD04HLA-20T tomorrow (24th July), maybe even tonight :D . Express freight to Australia is FREE and from what I've read on other forums, it takes between 4-9 days for delivery.

I will keep the thread updated as I progress through the upgrade :D

Update:
Have just purchased "Kinugawa Billet Turbocharger SUBARU 06-07 Legacy Liberty TD04HL-20T Twin Scroll" for $999.00 USD from Kinugawa. This payment according to Paypal was sent to "Kamak Dynamics USA Group" which is a good sign :D

Please let us know how you go with it, Jason. I will be getting the same turbo at some stage down the track (perhaps when I get my tax return), so any feedback would be appreciated.

Also super keen, much cheaper to buy that than rebuild a vf38 with a vf34 core...

Would love to see stock and new turbo dyno result comparison

UPDATE:

Have confirmed with Kinugawa about the actuator springs. I am getting the 1.0Bar as standard. I have also ordered the 1.2Bar and 1.5Bar springs. $10 USD each. :)
Quick reply for emails too!

Hi Jason
The parcel will be shipped before this Friday
It might take around 3-5 days to your door via EMS
Regards,
Bruce

Considering getting mine dyno tuned in the vf38 just to see what it's at first. But that's $450, half the new one. Decisions decisions

Will run close to being out of fuel at 1bar@6600rpm. The 1.2 and 1.5bar will need injector upgrade
