Wanting to buy Liberty GT

Postby Yass » Sat Jul 12, 2014 1:27 am

Hey guys,

Im new here and to subarus.

Im looking at a couple of Liberty GT wagons
Im just a bit stuck as the autos seem to be cheaper then the manuals and im wondering if its worth spending the extra cash for a manual?

Been looking at a 2004 MY04 GT 125 000km which is an auto - full service history had the major service done.

and a 2005 MY06 GT 110 000km which is a manual - full service history had major service done.

and is there anything i should be looking out for when buying these cars?

Thanks!
Yass

Both auto and 5sp manual are capable of handling about the same power
IMO, auto is a decent box with good fluid (assuming no mechanical issues).

As for common issues; I looked at:
- front LCA rear bushes
- corrosion on the fuel, heater and other lines in the engine bay
- oil leaks from the cam seals and cam covers (rocker covers)
- oil leaks from the turbo (VF38 in the auto seems to be more prone to oil leaks than the TD04HLA in the manual from what I can tell)

In my experience with my car (MY04 with 236,000 when I bought it), the only issues that really needed attention were the rear shocks (bum sag), and the front LCA rear bushes. I then also had an oil leak from an exhaust cam sensor which caused some issues but it's only $80 for a new sensor from Subaru so not too expensive

+1 on cam seals and cover

Mine were leaking and all 4 bolts had seized and had to be drilled out. $80 per bolt plus labour to replace some $20 seals... I wasn't impressed

Generally though they are strong and reliable mechanically, just have to be strict with maintenance and using quality parts
