Exhaust VVT not retarding/ not working

1 Problem solved:

The metal housing that the solenoid goes into has a strainer. That strainer was blocked up!
Pics later. But right now I'm having another problem.

The car wont rev beyond 5,000RPM without after fire (backfire) and then if I drive it the IAM drops.

If no cel, reset ECU (disconnect battery neg).

VVT should reset a little after 2nd key on when battery reconnected.

Otherwise, perhaps you might want to check for inlet leaks, see the pre tune link in my sig :)

Can you log this behavior and post it?

That strainer was clogged. Didn't even know there was one in it! Haven't seen that anywhere on the net!

That's your Banjo bolt filter that I was telling you to remove before

That will be your problem. Reset your ecu and it should be ok

Oh well, thought that only appeared in the hard lines.
That fixed the VVT non-retardation issue but not the backfiring and no rev above 5000rpm issue :(

Where was that filter? In the bucket of the a avcs cam solenoid?

Which part in the diagram on previous page?

Your backfire and inability to rev may be due to a stuck solenoid. You need to use an engine flush as what may have happened is the gunk came out and lodged in the avcs cam trigger and thus not allowing cam retard

Any luck with the ECU reset?
Good time to do a serious oil flush IMHO ;)

That is outstanding work locating that filter in that mani!!!
Quite an 'advance' in the knowledge base ;)

Check for inlet leaks = backfire under boost

Filter was in the bucket that the exhuast solenoid goes into, the square piece right in the center hole :)
I'm gonna recheck timing tomorrow too as i suspect it is off a notch or two, or the tensioner is going causing one of the cams to retard/advance as the belt comes loose. ...but i really just think it's the timing off.

but i need a safe oil flush. Any ideas to the bestest approach?

ECU has been reset, I also unplugged the maf to ensure it wasn't an inlet leak. Revved hesitated just the same.
lol @ 'advance'
Yes, I had to take a pic of it and add to the KB!

See the pretune link for testing for boost/vac leaks: log something whilst spraying engine bay w/ carb cleaner... Etc etc etc :)

Oil flush eg wynns or ATF or kero or UEC or just run delvac mx or do all!
Flush again with cheap mineral then drop it and put your normal oil or delvac in :)

Thnx. My timing was off by 1 tooth on the crank mark.

Still getting misfires though. Now it reminds me of when I had coilpack problems. I checked the right hand side with a mechanic friend. Now we have the left to do tmr.

edit: remembered i once had a upper cam sensor connection issue that rendered my car immobile with afterfires. hmmm. Hopefully that's my problem!

Cripes! At least you can diy most of the fixes... I hope.

Keep resetting the ecu as you go so you are not fighting any learnt parameters , and key on and off a few times before re-logging.

So let me see if i understand the location of the turbo banjo..
It's the bolt on the backside of the head facing the firewall ?

I'm starting to wonder if i have more blockages. Keep seeing all 4 AVCS being out of sync.

Yes that should be it.

Also in the inlet ocv banjos (TBC) and the exhaust ocv manifold (aka housing).

OK all

Another bit of information:
When I rev the car, I can see the tachometer (rev clock) jumping a bit. In the log it shows it jumping RPM back and forth like this

3934
4328
4691
4271 <--drops here
5332
4828
4984
4910
4733
5371

Another:

4041
4451
4868
4402
5519
5866
5686

So it's going back and forth a lot. I have power right up to the mid 4,000 then it is like a soft limiter
I'm leaning towards cam or crank sensor. Weekend before i know though.
