Thanks to this thread - rough idle in my parents MY04 GT, which has been evident for some time... now fixed.

Just replaced the front O2 sensor with the one from Japan Parts linked above (around $120 shipped).

All sorted problem solved cheers guys! :D

Having rough idle issues myself :?

MAF is clean, plugs and coil packs are <10,000km old (call them new), fuel's fine, O2 sensor probably farked. Injectors could be farked also, but they're being replaced shortly so not bothering even looking into them...

Thanks J-parts, new O2 sensor delivered for ~$115 :air_kiss:

We took delivery of our new 2004 MY05 GT today.

They had just replaced the battery at the car yard when we test drove it.
Had a miss at idle that was bad enough to stall it sometimes in drive.
Other than that it test drove fine.

I bought it subject to it running fine.
Dealer did the right thing and booked it in with a Subaru specialist garage near them who had the car on Tuesday.

From what I know they checked MAF, plugs, o2, vac leaks and banjo's.
They also relaced the battery with a new one and checked the alternator.

Dealer drove it home Wednesday night and said it was fine.

Which it was....sort of.

With the climate control on it idles at 700rpm.

However when I got the car I opened the sunroof, turned off the AC, and started to drive.
Pulled up at the lights and it has a stutter and is idling at about 600rpm. Not stalling, but enough of a miss and a bit of idle hunting that I know its not right.
Turn the AC on and the idle comes up a bit and you can just tell it still there.

Any ideas ???

Given it's just had a battery replace, I was going to drive it nicely for a day or so and see if it is relearning, but I doubt it.

Cheers

Dale

Welcome and congrats on the new car!

You say they "checked" the O2 sensor.... how exactly?

Did they actually replace the front O2 sensor with a new one? Common issue for these to go faulty apparently on this model, I'd get it replaced if it hasn't been.

Your description of the issue sounds exactly the same as my parents car, which turned out to be a faulty front O2 sensor (and I should note, Subaru had "checked" this issue before but never fixed it or even suggested replacing the O2 sensor).

I've been told that it can take a little while for the ECU to re-learn idle and it may drop revs occasionally. I'd say if it is still exhibiting the problem after a few days then it is something else. They said they checked the 02 sensor. These don't necessarily fail outright. It may be worth just changing it as they fail often. Can get them from rhdjapan.com for around $110 delivered (http://www.rhdjapan.com/subaru-oem-air- ... -2006.html).

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like it may have just been relearning after all. Drove it about 15km's yesterday and about 50 today and it is driving fine now.

Fingers crossed :)

Cheers

Car is still missing at idle intermittantly.

If lights are on, or AC is on, idle is bumped up slightly and it almost masks the miss.

But sitting at the lights, about 50% of the time , 15 - 20 odd seconds after stopping the miss / stumble starts.

It is going back to mechanic on the 5th of May ( next day i can get off work )

Suspicion at the moment is possibly an injector, as the VVT all checks out fine, as do the ignition and air flow sides of things.
Plugs and leads have been checked, throttle body has been soak cleaned off the vehicle, banjo screens removed and system tested for flow, MAF cleaned.
Car has a new battery, and alternator volts are fine.

No CEL codes, and as the issue is intermittant i probably would rule out a leak down test for a cylinder issue...

Fingers crossed it gets fixed, this is my wifes new car, and she is disabled and drives with hand controls as she has MS and cant walk properly anymore.
It needs to be reliable for her....

If anyone has any other suggestions , happy to hear them.

Cheers

Dale

Failing all of that.. I would definitely be replacing the O2 sensor

Even just for piece of mind, as they aren't exactly new cars any more and knowing the history of them failing it could be near its last legs any way

Just a thought

What is your actual alternator voltage both cold and warm?

I'm not sure of the voltages.
All checked out by the mechanic looking at it.
Will ask next time I speak to him ( or have a look if I can find my multimeter ) :)

It did end up being an injector after all.
Passenger side front one.

Currently testing the vehicle for a week or so with a loaner set, and then we will have mine cleaned and flowed and reinstalled.

Must say, i am pretty happy with how thorough the mechanic has been.
Almost everything in the car has been checked, cleaned and tested by now.
Even better, this will all be paid for by the dealer we bought it from , as the problem existed when we test drove the car ( they assumed it was just a relearn afdter a new battery was put in ), is on the RACV report as an item to be fixed prior to purchase ( they did have a look at it to their credit ) , and is covererd by the warranty :)

Idling with stock injectors...is it a bit "off"?

I've logged mine for ages and my tuner can't see an issues (looked at all sorts of possible causes like OCVs, etc etc) but it still has it's lumpy/stuttering moments.

Injectors possibly?
