Hi all, pretty new here, nice looking forum.
I'm just after current recommendations for an engine builder/machinist in Brisbane.
I'm a mechanic, this is my first suby and i've recently cracked a ring in my '04 Gt Auto. Just got the engine out tonight, ready to strip down. Ideally I'm looking for someone to rebuild my shortblock and I can do the rest from there.
Since finding on this forum the attention to detail needed with subaru bottom end building I'm basically trying to find a subaru orientated middle ground between the run of the mill 'Red Hill Engines' family car rebuild centre (not enough care) and the numerous all out race rebuild places that I imagine will charge a fair bit (too much care if you get what I mean). Just a daily drive with bolt on mods, no power plans so happy to stay stock and just put in some good pistons.
Any recommendations? I'm based in South Brisbane, willing to go as far as gold coast.
Thanks

Those 3 are the ones I keep hearing of so sounds good to me. Getting it stripped down tonight then I'll talk to them tonight about if it's worth rebuilding the bottom end or if I would end up around the same as the $2350 I've been quoted for EJ207 short motor from rising sun subaru.
Thanks guys

Would the cams from the grb spec c motor work in the z20 heads?

Yes but need to use the z20 cam pulleys and avcs triggers

Excellent, as I have a set of these cams lying around, and valve springs. Might be handy for a competent mechanic looking to make a powerful ej20x.

Do a full GRB STi Spec C motor, no point using the inefficient EJ20y heads when the GRB Spec C inlet ports are the biggest ports on an EJ ever

Have you ever looked at the z20s Matt? They are far from the worst. But I agree. Full spec C motor.

Ports are same size as d25 heads found on ej257 dual avcs versions
Agree not the worst, and if someone was on a budget and wanted to do it on the cheap, the spec c cams would be an upgrade worth doing in the z20 heads

Current plan is to buy a 207 short motor from rising sun, 180k on my current engine so will reco my existing ej20y quad avcs heads (regrind and stem seals) or would there be reasonable bang for buck gains to be made from porting and/or spec c cams?
Will look at turbo options - nothing special, just to get away from the pissy stock vf38, going to see what rising sun has when I go to visit them, or does anyone have any turbo's available or recommendations. Daily drive, not after any big top end power really.
v10 JDM grb ej207 long engine would be really nice but it comes with a few downsides to just getting the 207 short block
- I'm hoping to have the car back on the road before Christmas and haven't been able to find a v10 too easily
- v10 long engine will end up more expensive and it's a used engine.
