Noisy Throw away bearing....

Hi All,

2004 GT Sedan (twin scroll)

Just started to get a noisy throw away bearing... Noisy when I engage clutch, goes away when off...

Have just taken to mechanic, seem like they're good guys, going to do a genuine clutch kit including pressure plate and throw away bearing for about $1200

What do you all think ?

Sounds reasonable. Does clutch kit come with flywheel? I assume yours is dual mass?? May be worth changing to a single mass (ie. solid) flywheel if you need to change it.

I'm getting the lot. Single Mass is getting popped in. and the noise was the flywheel, not the throw away :) but same outcome had it been left. Going to be round $1500 all up

Price is fine. For reference, a Exedy HD clutch and SMF cost me around $1100

Including labour, $1500 is on the money for SMF + clutch conversion kit. Subsequent clutch replacements will then only set you back around 1k including labour.

Funnily enough I'm getting noise from the throwout bearing off clutch, but as soon as you give the pedal the lightest pressure, it disappears straight away.

Apparently this is due to fork vibration and can be fixed by lubing it up. Just haven't had time to do it. Luckily doesn't warrant clutch replacement just yet, is kinda annoying though since the throwout bearing + housing was a Subaru genuine part and was installed by the dealer, if it fails prematurely it's going to be a shitfight getting them to foot the cost of clutch replacement since it's aftermarket.

Bit of a resurrection for this, but is your clutch still sounding the same? I ask as mine has exactly the same symptoms - rattle when clutch fully engaged, goes as soon as the pedal is touched. Clutch specialist considers the clutch on the way out, which is annoying as it was apparently replaced, along with SMF conversion, a couple of months before I bought the car. I plan to just run it until it starts slipping, and then replace, but haven't yet got a quote for the job.

Is this noise in neutral when completely out? (Pedal untouched)?
As I have the same noise but didnt really notice it until I stiffened transmission mounts....hopefully just normal tranny noise amplified due to bushes

Noise is there once transmission properly warmed up and clutch pedal out/untouched. Doesn't matter if in gear or neutral - can hear it as I'm going along in gear. No problems (at the moment) with selecting or changing gear either moving or at rest. Clutch specialist reckons the first thing that'll happen is that it will start slipping, then its replacement time.

I ended up selling my car back to the previous owner but it still had the same noise. It could be due to a faulty clutch install but what I found is that mine was less of a rattle and more of a constant squeak, along with very poor pedal feel, like it was stiff.
Subaru dealership told me they thought the clutch was on its way out too which I called BS because the pedal action is really nice and low, absolutely no slipping at all.

It would happen all the time, regardless of cold or warm, but the moment you touched the pedal it stopped, It would even occur during driving but the road noise would usually drown it out. As hinted in my previous post I ended up lubricating my clutch fork; pull back the boot and get a small paint brush with a bit of bearing grease on it, and lubricate the pivot point. Fixed it right away

My fork boot actually doesn't seal properly anymore, so as soon as I got a bit of excess moisture under the bonnet it would happen again, so I'd just keep it well lubed.

I think the actual problem is either the throwout bearing or poorly installed in the housing (last time I replaced the clutch it was actually a genuine Subaru bearing and housing installed by the dealer), but as long as the throwout bearing doesn't crap itself, just keeping the fork lubed to dampen any excess vibration and keep the pedal feel good was fine for me.

Guys!
Any disadvantages from going from a Dual mass to a Single?
Clutch just went in my car. The bearing had worn out the housing, looking into fitting a sleeve for a cheaper alternative. Mechanic said he was looking into a single mass, was just wanting to know if there was any disadvantages?

Guys, I just went down this path (heard the noise, thought I'd wait) but have a look at the images in my thread:

Seems like the same issue that Pyramidrocker had but since the 5spd is as rare as hens teeth in WA its gonna cost me a bit to fix/replace. I'm looking into the sleeve fix too and will post the results when I get some.
My point is, it doesn't always pay to wait until it develops, its possible I could have avoided this situation all together.... :cry:

Yep - all noted. Have had it rechecked by a different clutch specialist, who also agreed the clutch is not right and prob not going to last long. Also said that earlier rather than sooner would be better, so on the list for the end of this month when I get paid. Looking at $1200, which seems about right, perhaps top price, but convenience factor is high with this one.

Right, well, big update on this...

Got the clutch changed today, expecting a clutch kit and bill of around $1200. Get a call from the mechanic to say that whilst the flywheel is serviceable, its in no condition to be covered by any sort of warranty, and that there is lots for me to look at when I collect the car. OK, need the work to be done and life to move on.

When I collected the car, the mechanic went through the old clutch/flywheel, showing me how the clutch ha not been put in right and was misaligned. This misalignment was evident in the way in which the pressure plate was wearing and various coloured marks on all parts of the assembly. But it was the flywheel that showed most concern. The dowels that take the weight of the pressure were all loose and in being moved and stretched has caused the edges of their holes to become raised and cracked. The dowels were easily lifted out by fingertips, and were a risk to being let loose within the clutch/gearbox.

On top of that, many of the bolts on the bell housing had been rounded off, and one bolt was stripped. These have obviously now been replaced.

Simply put, it was a great assembly put together by chimps. Remember, this was a new Exedy clutch/flywheel assembly installed four weeks before I bought the car, and by today had covered just 7000km.

Before anyone suggests it, yes I had already taken the car back to the place it was fitted, but the owner was not interested in helping at all, pointing out that the warranty for parts does not, in the case of a private sale, transfer to the new owner. Trading Standards NSW back this up.

So, if anyone needs a clutch changing on the Northern Beaches I've got two recommendations - one is to be avoided at all costs (PM me if you think you or your friends are heading to a franchised outfit around Dee Why/Brookvale), the other is Warringah Clutch and Brake Centre in Brookie. They're probably not going to be the cheapest, but the service and advice has been brilliant.

Finally, if you've got a noise related to the clutch, don't wait for something to happen, cos it'll be expensive when it does.
