loss of power uphill

I've been experiencing an intermittent loss of power/missing/backfire while driving up steep hills (low speed)... especially on a cold engine... sometimes exasperated by low fuel (but not always)... anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions? Possible fuel filter maybe? or something more sinister eg: expensive?? MY04 GT Liberty Wagon.

start with the simple things
fuel filter and pump
plugs
coilpacks
