Hi Guys, Excuse my ignorance please but only new to all of this ā My issue is that my mechanic tells me that my turbo on my Subaru Liberty GT 04 5 speed auto has been blown due to oil starvation (apparently) now bear in mind I just had the turbo re-built less than 8months ago and now this has happened ā my mechanic is saying I need a new turbo and that will cost $3 grand plus more for labour to fix. My question finally is that can anyone help me out or steer me in the right direction so Iām not taking for a ride a 3rd time with a simple bolt on replacement turbo, Also is mine a twin header set up for turbo also? Any help with any contact numbers, best options would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers =)

Hey mate, appreciate the the reply -turbo was rebuilt by Rob Lupo down here in Tassie 8months ago - is a VF38 the factory turbo? turbo hasnt been modified at all & a week ago the turbo went,metal on metal noise and was advised turbo was starved of oil and now can not be fixed,hence the reason im on here trying to source some info as i need a replacment turbo.

VF38 is the stock turbo on the auto 04GT. You can purchase them new from eBay for about $1800.
I would be hitting up the bloke you rebuilt it and seeing if there was any warranty/guarentee offered... 8 months is far too soon.

Hey thanks for the added reply and info =) yeah i asked about warrenty and was advised it only had a 3months warrenty

have you ever heard of a turbo going so soon to apparent oil starvation??? i've read up about the banjo bolt that has a filter/screen in it that can clog up but all is ok apprently, i think my mechanic is trying shift the blame on to me about the whole thing. can you send us a link for the turbos for me to follow? i've looked every where online for one but i think my turbo is a twin scroll set up also which is more difficult to find. cheers Will

Yes it is twinscroll. Therefore quite rare/not as common as single scroll. It COULD work out cheaper to conver to single scroll (second hand parts) but I am no expert..
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Subaru-Liber ... 3cd0e32dc5You can also just buy a replacement cartridge but I have no idea what is involved/if it would suit your situation.

VF34 can be machined to fit the VF38 exhaust housing. Much more performance potential and the VF34 is a better ball bearing turbo

Definitely will not cost you $3k!
I know 2 guys who have fitted them, great results even with a stock exhaust/stock car

Adelaide Turbo Services will do the VF34/38 hybrid, and costs $2200 for the turbo to be done. Alternatively, rebuild of the VF38 will set you back $1000, so its a big price difference!

I should add, those prices are assuming you are able to re-use the existing turbo, i.e. the housing isnt completely farked... which it shouldnt be

Hey Guys - cheers for the info - current VF38 turbo is completly stuffed and is unable to be rebuilt - i had it rebuilt 8months ago and then two weeks ago it went bang - no oil to turbo which has caused the whole issue as advised to me by my mechanic - they are asking 3grand for a new vf38 but the other option is sounding a little better - really im looking for a direct bolt on option but seems like a vf38 twin scroll turbo is as rare as hens teeth now days....

Mate,
Where are you located?
Who was the original mech?
And who fitted the re-built turbo?
