Will04GT wrote:Hey Guys - cheers for the info - current VF38 turbo is completly stuffed and is unable to be rebuilt - i had it rebuilt 8months ago and then two weeks ago it went bang - no oil to turbo which has caused the whole issue as advised to me by my mechanic - they are asking 3grand for a new vf38 but the other option is sounding a little better - really im looking for a direct bolt on option but seems like a vf38 twin scroll turbo is as rare as hens teeth now days....

VF34 that was rebuilt up here used the VF38 exhaust housing, cartridge and compressor were replaced by the VF34 items, exhaust housing machined to take the VF34 cartridge

Great ideas mentioned.
I'm about to fit a vf34 to my auto BL5 too.
I might do this for the intercooler: http://legacygt.com/forums/showpost.php ... tcount=119

I just thought i'd comment on this as i've recently been through the same thing. My turbo blew and I spent ages deciding how to proceed. I gave up on bolt on replacements and decided to get it rebuilt by GCG turbochargers. I sent it to them in the mail, they rebuilt it with the VF34 cartridge and they sent it back 5 days later looking brand new. The good thing about doing it this way is the turbo has a bit more kick then it had before. It helped to get it tuned though, thanks Matt. :)

while you have the turbo out remove that screen on the banjo oil feed, that is the main culprit that causes all the problem, also the 12500km Subaru service interval, too long for a turbo car, i do mine every 5k's, if you do that you won't have a problem with your new turbo.

Get Bill at ATS to replace a brand new vf34 core into your Vf38 housing, that would make it a more reliable setup.

Hi guys, new here.

Same thing as above just happened to my mothers my04 GT. It has since rebuilt and is running like a dream. Just wanting to know as to what can be done to prevent it from happening again. Have been told that it is due to the filter in the oil feed line being so small and getting clogged leading to the starvation of the turbo?

Cheers.

Hi ...!
Well I hope it may work better, but you should must keep it away from dust to use for a long time because mostly the oil issue is due to the clay .
Think before you speak .

For anyone interested, this is the filter located in the banjo bolt for the turbo oil line.
According the the US Legacy guys, this is a pretty common culprit when turbos die from oil starvation.
I spoke to a Subaru dealership (toowong) in brisbane and the head mechanic there had no doubt when stating that "the filter did not exist nor are they a problem"

....

I pulled mine out last week, was very clean but glad it was removed nevertheless.

sorry this has very little to aid the cause of fixing the problem but can't help thinking of this joke every time i see the topic

An Eskimo is traverling through Auckland, when his car breaks down. A Kiwi farmer driving by, decides to stop and help.

After checking under the hood, he looks up and says to the Eskimo,

" Looks like you've blown a seal, mate."

The Eskimo shouts back,

" So what, you **** sheep!!!!"
Speed doesn't kill its the sudden stop that does.
