Hi guys (first time poster)
Im wondering if anyone can give me some advice on trying to trouble shoot a er SS (Speed sensor) light showing on the dash randomly. I have scoured the internet for possible solutions (without having to replace but have had no luck. Im pretty sure this is purely a sensor fault, possible loose connector?
Symptoms of the light when it happens is, Cruise Control disables when on. Its noted with the ABS light coming on when the error appears.
Any advice or tips please?

Cheers
Shag.

Given youre an my04 I'm assuming you're an auto as they all were

Two things to check - the lateral g sensor near your handbrake (under the carpet)

And the other is your actual speed sensor clip on the auto transmission. You can't see the speed sensor from the outside as its located internally but you could check the connections to it or have someone check the error code and confirm

Cheers for the info Dr, I will try to locate these connectors and give em a good inspection.
Was driving this morning (only just picked up the car yesterday) and noticed that it only happens when I throw it in tiptronic (sports). Thats when the ABS light will remain on. I think I may have to bite the bullet and get the Speed Sensor replaced from a Suby dealership.

No Probs

From what youve just described, Sounds to me like its the sports matic shift solenoid sticking or playing up (thus SS)

I will warn you now that unfortunately not many mechanics in Australia will be able to correctly diagnose and check this for you as they do not have the specialized knowledge required for these gearboxes nor do they have the time / interest to do so.

Probably 10 or so I could think of across the country. I learnt this the hard way when I took mine to an "auto trans specialist" who was apparently the guru of electronic boxes. $900 later in parts and labour and he couldn't fix my shift solenoid and ended up actually breaking my centre diff and causing it to bind up, resulting in a further cost of $2000 for supply and fit of a second hand box. So $3k cost almost.

Subsequently found out I could've done the solenoid myself (apparently he had tried this without luck the first time around when he charged $900). Should've backed my gut in the first place.

Why do I bring this up? Because I'm almost 100% certain any mechanic / auto place you will take it to will tell you the entire Gbox needs replacing, because they don't have the know how. So just be prepared.

Good luck mate.

Im located in Canberra mate, I have a booking to take it to a Subaru Dealer this Wednesday, if they try to rob me for a new gear box. I'll just tell em no thanks and live with no cruise control when the ABS lights up due to enable sports mode from triptronic... $2k for a new gear box to fix a sensor light coming on thats a bit crazy

That's not new - that's used

I don't know of anyone in Canberra I can recommend maybe you can post a question in the general section and see what others have to say
