Alternative to the MRT XC Kit for a MY04 Liberty GT

Postby Xqx » Tue Apr 02, 2013 10:07 am

I've just upgraded (from a `92 RS Tubro) to a MY04 Liberty GT Auto.

Reading MRT's sales materials, it seems that making these cars go faster is more difficult than just slapping on a bigger exhaust, re-piping a cold-air intake and getting a CPU remap. But, from what I've seen on these forums MRT don't have the greatest of reputations, which seems to come mostly from their pricing.

But, when you add up the components in a MRT XC kit (Turbo, exhaust, intercooler, piping, ECU, Petrol Pump and Labour) it seems you could come to $10k pretty easily if you don't know what you're doing; could result in awful turbo lag, and it would be very easy to blow up an engine finding out what a 'safe' level of boost using a local tuner.

So, I wanted to ask - does anyone know of any alternatives to the MRT XC Kit, or have a sample BOM with indicative prices where you would go to get this put together for half the price of MRT in the Brisbane area?

What power are you after?

TBE + tune will net you 150-160kw atw which is plenty of power for most people. From there you would be focusing on handling mods plus sorting out your brakes and making sure you've got good tyres! Instant gokart. Don't bother with CAI unless you're chasing closer to 200+

Otherwise you'll be looking at TMIC + turbo + supporting mods..

If you don't mind travelling a little bit (1hr or so) then go to AM Autos in Noosa (sunshine coast)

They are the go to guys as far as I am concerned for Subaru mods. They don't do tuning but there are a few people in brisbane that do. A fellow on here that goes by the name Coyote (memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=407) has a good rep who's in Bris.

I can say I've personally had an overall good experience with KiDo tuning, but you should make your own judgement on that. Being an 04GT your car is Auto so you will benefit highly from Matt's DBW tweaking.

PS: Stay away, far far away from ECUtek tunes (aka ECUwreck)

You could get a pretty sweet setup for 10K.

Do a lot of searching around here. There are lots of conversations on the topic.

Also maybe ask some local mechanics that they recommend if you give them some info on what you are after and how much you might be willing to spend.

This thread is aimed at the 2.5T not the 2.0T, but it's worth a read for amusements sake :) - viewtopic.php?f=45&t=16305

What he said.
Work out what power your after / as well as budget.
Steer well clear of MRT, 10K spent elsewhere will net a far better end results (including handling & brake upgrades)
As far as tuners are concerned theres been lots of good feedback for Kido aka Throttle Happy (Matt) but inlight of recent posts threads i'd probably look at alternatives.

It's not just their pricing. If you want to do it right, send me a PM.

Stay away from the mob mentioned

And listen to whatever coyote tells you (excluding his opinion on certain hatchbacks and their supremacy...)
