Single scroll turbo upgrade

Postby dle » Thu Jan 31, 2013 9:16 pm

Hey guys just wondering if you guys could advise on what would be involved to change from twin scroll-equal length header to a single scroll-unequal length header set up on a preface lift 2.0l GT?

Would a set up from 07-09 spec b be direct bolt on?
I.e headers, turbo, up pipe, dump pipe

Or even from wrx series?

Obviously a tune would be involved afterwards but was just wondering if anything else was involved/complications.

Cheers,
Dave

Zach, the pre's had different TMIC to the spec b's because of the flange. Did you mean an aftermarket one? Is the stock TMIC from 2.0GT not able to cool the new turbo down?

Nathan, is there any clearance issues or complications if parts were sourced from either 07-09 spec b or 08+ wrx and fitted onto EJ20 engine?

I am under the impression the TMIC from the pre-fl isn't compatible with the post-fl and vice versa, hence I wouldn't imagine bolting up an post-face turbo (for example) would allow the pre-face tmic to fit properly..

So from more online research about this, when removing the old turbo (vf38?) and swapping for a new turbo (ie vf46) This will mean the flange/short pipe will change therefore allowing/needing to change the spec b TMIC as well? If that's right then I think I understand it now.

Wondering if anybody else on the forum has done this exercise and can assist?

Appreciate the help

Why would you downgrade to a vf46??

Your on the right track. Get Dump, headers, turbo, TMIC. Look into getting a better single scroll turbo as well. Blouch or kinugawa. Also look at a set of ceramic coated equal length headers. Ill let you know how I go when I do my conversion. I also got a perrin inlet pipe aswell. Wrx 08+ parts will fit too

can't be that bad of a downgrade, if that?

from what i understand, twin scroll / equal length set up has faster spool and all but the spec b's and wrx's are all single scroll set ups? im thinking more peak power and even if there is more lag due to the single scroll, a good tune could rectify that?

Fair enough

Good luck with the conversion.

Dave,

Check out my topic in this section, I am also thinking of the same and there's a lot of useful info that members have posted... but you would need headers and up pipe from 2.5 GT as a minimum, and would also suggest a VF52 as well.

Yep, pretty much need headers up pipe, TMIC and dump pipe to do the conversion. Have my eyes on a VF52 but can't afford the conversion at the moment. Will have to see towards the end of the year.

Thanks for the help guys
