MOD Advice for MY06 (EJ20T) GT Auto Stat Wag

Postby swingn » Wed Feb 20, 2008 1:41 pm

Hi everyone

Been doing a lot of reading on mods these days (I thought I had gotten over them).

I was wondering is anyone had any advice for some minor engine mods for my GT Auto Stat Wag?

At this stage I have got a Unifilter & an ECUTEK dyno re-tune by MRT (& I would like to avoid going back there if possible). My car goes real well at the moment, but I just want a bit more. Considering is it my daily driver I don't want to go too hardcore, but I'm also worried about the auto. MRT reckon that can get dumb power out of their XC kit & that there test car was auto & didn't have an issue. I can't say I really trust what they tell me.

At this point in time this is what I'm thinking:

New TMIC - HKS / AVO / HyperFlow - Any preference?

BOV - HKS SSQV / GFB GT - Is this worth while?

HKS ES Premium Cat Back Exhaust - Have read the past post & I'm sold, especially at $1060!

HKS Premium Suction Kit OR HKS Racing Suction Reloaded Kit

GFB 3 Pulley Kit

Then a full re-tune.

Just so we're all on the right wave length, I'm not looking for a 13sec car (Although it would be nice). I just want to make the most out of my car while still keeping it a reliable as an everyday driver.

So what do you guys think? Anything else I should look at doing? Perhaps anything I should cross off the list?

Any & all feed back would be extremely helpful.

Cheers
Matty

I have very similar mods that you want as per my sig below.

Nice to drive, reliable, not a weapon compared to some but a good all round 13 sec car.

Thanks SkoobyGT.

Just a few quick ones... Is your car auto also?

How have you got the SSQV set up? Plumb back or open?

Have you been able to keep your engine cover?

I pretty much want to keep it stock looking in the engine bay. Mainly because I'm young. Young, turbo car & cops generally don't mix.

TMIC - HKS is the best one available, however bang for buck I would recommend AVO. HKS is more than double the cost of the AVO, and definitely won't give you double performance.

BOV - comes down to how you want it to sound :) HKS has a very unique sound, GFB is a bit less obnoxious, and also remains stealthily hidden under the engine cover.

Exhaust - gives you a better note and looks, apparently no power gains unless you're going nuts.

Intake - why not A'PEXi? Cheaper than the HKS kits, but less bling.

Pulleys - still deciding on them for myself, so i can't give opinion :) apparently it's not a huge gain.

Mine is a 2004 GT and auto (Didnt make manuals for the 04)

I have a SSQV, full atmo, no problems at all with stalling etc.

I have not cut the engine cover in any way, until I get my TMIC soon

Hi Tancla

I've heard the HKS TMIC is awesome, but just not worth the money. Same thing goes for the HKS down pipe. I was quoted $2100!

I am a huge fan of SSQV BOV, my main worry was the stalling issue. Plus I have heard that it can cause a problem with your turbo if it isn't plumbed back.

Not expecting a lot out of the cat back system. Even if it gives me minimal power / performance gains it'll be worth it for the noise.

As for the Apexi CAI, I mainly haven't looked at it because I can't find any info on it. I noticed it has been mentioned numerous times in various posts, but the HyperFlow & HKS systems have info readily available. If you can give me a link for the Apexi product, that would be awesome. I don't really care about the bling factor, bottom line is if I get a pod I'll be boxing it up to keep it as stock looking as I can.

An atmo-venting won't cause your car to stall. My car is a 2.0T auto, and no stalling issues here with my GFB on full atmo!

A'PExi CAI - dry element filter, works just fine. I can get the intake kit for $200 delivered to your door - the HKS one is $400+ but it includes more piping (A'PExi goes to the front of the engine cover, whereas the HKS Racing Suction kit goes to the turbo). Remember that aluminium conducts heat much more than plastic does.

That's awesome mate! Do you find you get much of a noise with the auto? The HKS SSQV is the best sounding BOV in my opinion.

So when are you getting you TMIC? Any particular brand your going for? After you get it, how much of the engine cover will you have to cut / mod?

Sorry for all the somewhat annoying questions. Considering the GT is not what you would call a cheap car, I just want to make sure I make the right choices.

Cheers

You won't make wrong choices. Everything can be removed and sold :P

Autos have plenty of noise... just sounds kinda funny sometimes, cos the BOV doesn't vent on gear changes.

TMIC, he was looking at an AVO one. Cut the top edge of the cover to fit the TMIC.

Great to hear I shouldn't have an issue the a BOV. Honestly have had a fair few concerns about it.

With the CAI, do you have a website link or an image of it? Pretty keen if its only $200. I have been quoted $600 & $700 for the HKS stuff.
