Oh Oh .. Oil Leak...

Hi Guys..

During the process of bleeding my brakes on the weekend, I noticed a little bit of oil on the inlet pipe of the Intercooler (standard TMIC)

Now, I cant understand where that oil would be coming from.. the only possible explanation that I can think of is that the VF40 is oil cooled, and its leaking?.. but even that doesnt really make sense, as if thats the case, why is it a) not burning up in the turbo and smoking b) how is it getting out of the intercooler.. with just 18PSi of pressure, it shouldnt be enough to allow oil to escape??

Here are some pics :

Any Ideas guys? Turbo's are not my strong point, so any advice welcome :)

Also noticed that the cv joints at the gearbox on the front driveshafts have a bit of oil on them, (only the first 6 inches or so) so I guess I will have to keep an eye on that also.. :( could be an expensive couple of months

That might be the reason why some of the guys run a catch can.

From what I have heard... if you are running high PSI, the catch can will collect the oil. Not sure from where or how though.

yeah get a catch can. next time you take your tmic off you'll find that its lined with oil.

I don't know if it should be leaking down to the CV boots though... but yes, it probably seeps out the side of the hose clamps. The stock intercooler inlets/outlets are hard plastic.

It's known as 'blow by'.. as mentioned above it's one of the reasons for an air-oil separator or catchcan..

Empty your IC of any oil in it too..

That oil is the reason for turbo-timers also..

I rea though, that the gen4 Liberty doesn't require a turbo timer as the oil still circulates after the key is off.

I don't remember where it was though, so I can't confirm whether it's a credible source or not... I just drive gently on the last leg of the trip home :)

Correct me if I am wrong, but from memory... the MY05 and above circulates after the engine is turned off, not the MY04.

I have never heard the fan still turning after I turn off my MY04 GT, but have heard an MY06 fan still running after the engine turn off.

Anyone?

My car is an MY05.. and it doesn’t leave the fan running after you turn it off..

Secondly, well aware of Blow By.. but I still don’t understand where it is coming from.. blow by is oil coming past the rings correct? if so, why is there oil coming from the turbo, with air that hasn’t even been in the engine yet???

I'm probably totally on the wrong path.. but yeah, blow by doesn’t sound right (in my naivety)

TMIC will be coming off soon for a good clean ! and a catch can will be going in, for safety's sake

I though there's no mechanical differences between MY04-05-06...
