MY04 Liberty GT Rough Idle SOLVED

I have a 2004 Liberty GT wagon (about 165,000km) that developed a rough idling issue a number of weeks ago. I took the car to a reputable Subaru mechanic... took them 3 days to diagnose the problem - they said it was a faulty variable valve timing gear in the left bank... They did the repair but the problem still persisted - at which point they think I may have damaged the valves in the left bank during the misfire... they sent the head off and repaired the valves... put the engine back together and problem still remains. After 3 weeks of trying to repair this car the mechanic has given up - said he cannot fix the problem and doesn't know what is wrong. Claims this is the first time he's seen this problem, says this is the first time he has not been able to fix a car in his career. What do I do?! has anyone come across this before. I've read of similar issues in other posts and forums but nothing quite like this. Do I go to Subaru? Will they charge me a fortune? Should I get a reco motor? Does anyone know a Subaru mechanic in Melbourne? HELP!

Mate that sucks. I'm sure he tried his best. There are many threads on the web regarding libs and rough idle. Sometimes even subaru don't do a good job in diagnosing. Rest assured there will be an answer.

My car had an issue where it had a rough idle, ended up being the valve clearances... they did a comp test, leak down test, put new better injectors in, changed maf, tuned, cam timing... did the clearances and re tuned and it was fixed,
has your mechanic done a comp test or leak down test?

Hi Guys,
Cheers for all the posts... car has been fixed! Took Subaru Doncaster 3 hours to sort it out. Turned out to be vvt regulator... the oil filter in the variable valve timing system had over time come apart and ended up blocking the system... Simple.

would you believe that bill was over $4000 and he didn't charge me a cent cause he couldn't fix the car! It's not everyday you come across such honest people these days

wow, your lucky. and +1 for Kido tuning. Matt would have found out the issue straight away.
