MY05 Brake Booster Swap

Postby clancey » Sat Sep 01, 2012 2:34 pm

Hi All,

I was wanting to pick the brain of anyone who has upgraded their Brake Booster/Master Cylinder on a pre-facelift Gen IV.

I'm in the process of doing mine and I can't really see how I can remove the brake booster (without pulling more bits off then I'd like) given the location of the turbo/shrouding. Nice to know if there is some secret technique I'm not aware of of whether I'm just going to have to pull more bits off to get it done.

Cheers

I got it out and it was an a-hole of a job. I'll post the details later on.

Cheers

Yep I can attest to this if motor isn't out

Basically you need to take everything out of the way to do it or risk scraping your knuckles and fingers to buggery

Glad your persistence paid off and you got it out in the end :)

Yeah all swapped and back together now.

Like you said I had to take a lot out. I might do a quick list of what I did for future reference:
1. Engine cover off
2. Master off (No Probs There)
3. Undo horizontal line to master from the ABS unit and slide towards the front of the car
4. Loosen all cables around the booster, disconnect any connectors that facilitate this (This is also a good time to take off the vacuum line to the booster)
5. Undo the bracket holding the two power steering lines and zippy out of the way
6. Intercooler out (I took the two bolts holding the TB side bracket out first and left it hanging, this made it a lot easier to get the intercooler out)
7. Remove intercooler bracket over the turbo heat sheild
8. Remove the heat shield (I had to remove the top plate and side mounting bracket for the engine stabiliser in order to make this happen, it's still a relatively tight squeeze to get the shield past the booster/turbo though)
9. Remove the mounting bracket for the heat shield from the turbo dump pipe
10. From inside the car, remove the cover above the pedals, brake pedal split pin and push-in pin and the 4 nuts holding the booster itself (A uni attachment for your ratchet is handy here)

After all of this is done, you are then able to remove the booster through the engine bay... Just... Either way it's a win.

Cheers

Now in a little while you can tell us if it is worth the hassle.
I know I couldn't be bothered.

I've just taken the car for a spin and there is loads of pedal now, although no doubt the goodrich lines I put on at the same time would have helped with that.

From my point of view it was worth it, but I can see it from both ways as after getting used to the car for the first few months after I bought it the pedal feel wasn't bothering me as much as when I first drove it. I wouldn't have paid someone to do it, let's put it that way.

Cheers
