turbo problem! help!

Postby jjjbell » Sat Sep 01, 2012 1:34 pm

Hi all,
New to site. I own a 2005 my06 lib gt wagon auto, 75000kms.
Yesterday the car stopped boosting, and started to make noise. Not bearing type noise, similar to induction whoosh with a lower pitch. We were 200kms from home, so were forced to crawl home. Noise is originating from under heat shield over exhaust manifold, right behind the turbo. During the 200km home, the car didnt overheat, or use any fluids at all.
Live in Cobar NSW (outback) 300km from nearest subaru service centre. Local mechanic cant even look at it till 13th sep.
Any ideas anyone??????????

I would hazard a guess to say two things.....

turbo is mcrooted or cat converter is mcrooted and you cant get boost as theres no airflow due to a blocked cat.

Could be wrong, dont care if I am...

I'll throw some more questions in

When u apply light throttle does it make a metallc / tinny sound ?

Does the car feel like it's struggling at around 2500rpm (when it should be coming on boost)?

My suspicion is it could be your turbo outlet to intercooler has come loose or severely worn - this would result in sort of a free spinning turbo without you actually feeling the boost (as the engine isn't getting any)

Thanks for the replies, under light accel it makes no noise at all. Only under heavy throttle. It doesnt want to rev above 2500 when under load. Definately no boost happening.

Check your turbo outlet pipe to intercooler. Sounds to me like you have a massive boost leak

removed the engine cover, got my wife to rev the car while i sprayed soapy water over all the plumbing joins i can reach. No bubbles :( . I am now thinking maybe the wastegate diaphragm is not intact. If so, when looked at from above, the actuator shaft leads to the exhaust manifold :?: i think. Any one have some info on the r & r of the wastegate.....or if i should not even attempt it....etc....

See this is the problem with Internet diagnosis :)

Could well be your wastegate stuck open, but even then it "should" still make some boost, it wont bleed all the exhaust gases out

There are way too many variables to consider, but I'd start with basics first then work your way up to the larger problems by elimination.

Have you got access to a Tactrix cable to get a learning view snapshot and some romraider logs?

Engine needs to be under load to expose a boost leak.

Two 12mm bolts on turbo to intercooler, 12mm bolt on passenger side bracket(loosen 2 on manifold) then two 10mm bolts on BOV. Remove throttlebody to intercooler hose clamp, remove TMIC and check the o ring that mates to turbo but also the rubber gasket around throttlebody
