Tested the MobilScan device and software with the Legacy and it could not connect - so that's another avenue closed...

:(.
Thanks, am a bit under the pump at the moment so haven't had a chance to do anything, however OBDKey did get back to me and have provided the SSM patch so I'll look at this either later this weekend or next.

I will let you know if torque works on my 04 GT. Rumor has it that the cheap tiny versions of the ELM isn't going to work.

I got it to work on an 03 Honda civic, kinda irrelevant but... it's an old car.

Thanks JMLegacy. I have one of those cheap purple/orange ELM 27s (I think) and although it works perfectly with our Honda Accord, no go with the Subaru.

I haven't had a chance to look at this - largely due to life getting in the way, but also as I've got a bit of a bluetooth/laptop issue via Windows 8 and so I haven't been able to see if I can get the SSM fix to work first and so it all became a bit too hard.

Will see if I can muster up some more enthusiasm sometime soon.

you need to run a different comand if the firmware of your OBDKey is 1.40 or higher: (stolen from http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin ... sm-120972/)

OBDKey Commands

On Windows there is a tiny piece of utility code that was emailed to me by the OBDKey developer, this is used to switch to SSM mode. The alternative is to use Telnet and issue the commands yourself via Hyperterm, puTTY or a similar program on an Android phone.

This involves sending a couple of AT commands to the OBDKey as follows:

- Using your terminal program, open the serial port to your OBDKey
- Once connected, type in ATZ and press enter
- Then type in ATSPC and press enter.
- Unplug, wait a sec or two, and re-plug your OBDKey back in.

You should get an “OK” message or something like that after each AT command.

A few usefull OBDKey AT Commands:
ATZ Will reset the OBDKey
ATSP0 Will put the OBDKey into Auto-Detect ELM Mode (Note, that's a zero at the end)
ATSPC Will put the OBDKey into SSM Mode

So in your case the hurdle at the moment appears to be getting a Bluetooth connection to the device...
Those commands are right for OBDKey versions up to 1.40. At version 1.40 onwards we changed the SSM Mode command to ATSPS as ATSPC was adopted by the ELM327 for a "User CAN" protocol.

Our applciation "OBDKey Subaru SSM Configuration Utility" for Windows will configure the OBDKey into either SSM or OBDII mode depending on your selection. This is available for download by OBDKey owners (contact support@obdkey.com)

HI Mick,

It has been a while, but we have been meaning to fix the OBDKey / SSM / Torque issues and we have got there. If this rekindles your interest, that would be great!

Regards,

I'm going to admit defeat on this one.

Today I used the OBDTool windows tool to change the OBDKey to the Subaru SSM which it did after about 40 mins of faffing around with windows and bluetooth stuff and ports.

With Android and both the Torque and OBDKey apps I could kind of talk to the OBDKey device but not enough to actually get an actual reading from the engine ECU (2004 Liberty GT AUDM).

So I'm giving up on this as a method of talking with the car and will just stick with my largely one sided conversations.

The thing that is particularly annoying is that using the same Bluetooth adapter and Android app, talks happily with my Honda Accord - and it also talks away with the eBay special ELM orange and purple adapters too.

Thanks Matthew...

Sorry it hasn't worked for you bud :( I was holding off buying one waiting for your update... I guess it's not really worth the bother then...

My ebay orange and purple one works great with my wifes Fiesta and the Citroen C1 we got for the kids to learn in... Quite useful actually as the C1 doesn't even have a rev counter so I've been putting my phone up on the windscreen for them...

Not that I'm aware of with bluetooth ie with either the ebay special purple/orange ELM-327 (?) or the OBDKey.

Part of the issue is that although the car has the ODB2 socket, it doesn't actually communicate with the OBD protocol, instead uses the special SSM protocol.

I believe that having a dedicated hardware guage/device works fine as they are specially made to be compatible.

I have also bought an ebay special VAGCOM USB cable but haven't yet tinkered as I was still holding onto the dream that I could use bluetooth.

So I'd save your money for something worthwhile like a tune/bigger brakes/bigger turbo etc.

yeah thats why i inquired first before spending on something that doesn't work, out of curiosity wouldn't it be the software either on android or laptop that would be the problem to read ssm as i just see the dongle or a cable as a means of transmitting the information to phone/laptop

Yes that's correct. It is the SSM protocol that is the culprit and then either the hardware or software or both aren't capable of communicating with it.

Sorry no idea. There is a US forum that I used to look at, so maybe peruse that one to see if people mention ECU swaps.

You could also ask some of the tuners like Edward from Xtreme Racing Tuning: viewforum.php?f=53

Or some of the other tuners.

Good luck.
