I've given up for the moment and will wait to hear back from OBDKey.
I only purchased the Bluetooth module so in answer to your query:
can establish a bluetooth connection with both Windows PC and Android with no issues.
on Windows established that the bluetooth port was serial port 14
tried the ODBKey software, ECUExplorer software and both could link to the device and would basically say that they could see 3 sensors or something but whatever those sensors were they didn't result in anything showing
assumed that the issue was that the ECU needs to have SSM enabled
after a bit of googling established that what I needed to do was to connect via a terminal to the OBDKey and send it the command "ATSPC", I got Putty going and set the serial port to 14 and then sent the command.
"ATSP0" will reset the OBDKey to factory default which is the auto setting and "ATZ" will reset the OBDKey

after doing this I then had another go with Windows and then Android - Android being the OBDKey app and the Torque app and didn't have any further success with either
Admittedly I did this after about 9PM last night and then at 5AM this morning and so I probably wasn't thinking too straight and was getting agitated.
I'm coming to the conclusion that I may have to give up on the dream of a bluetooth device being able to wirelessly and effortlessly connect and do everything.
I also borrowed my fathers Ultraguage (some kind of scanguage) and had a bit of a tinker as well but had no luck.
So not a lot of success at all.
Will regroup at some point and investigate romraider and see how that one goes.
