Sti ECU upgrade

Postby subarugt05 » Mon Nov 05, 2007 8:55 pm

Hi Guys!

I haven't managed to find a specific answer on this, i've got a 06 Liberty GT Sedan, and i'm looking to get the Sti ecu upgrade....as i want it as Subaru as i can get it, has anyone else had this done to their GT's???

Subaru tells me there will be a noticible difference especially with exhaust and intercooler and boost controller , and that its all plug and play pretty much....

Anyone had thoughts? @ $1100 inc install....it seems good to me.

Thanks

wasting your time, not worth the money. ecutek or some of the other ecu reflashes available are so much better.

Alan, just a question, but why is it better?

Curious is all :) as I have gone the ECU path with my car....

Does the STi ECU still have parameters to stick by? Is so, do we know what these are?

It's a fixed ECU, and since it is from the factory, it would be quite conservative. That would be my guess.

Do the tune instead of the Sti ecu.

I went the custom tune option instead, I also asked about the STi ECU before deciding on a custom tune.

The only benefit I could see from having an STi ECU is that Subaru give a warranty on it. Other then that, I was like you, asking question but no answer, dunno what boost it runs at, dunno what AFR (Air/Fuel Ratio) etc... etc... Do you get a dyno sheet after installation to gauge before and after performance? all the little things that come with a custom tune which made me NOT go the STi ECU path.

I have the STi ECU in an MY05 which was stock, it netted around a 10% increase in kW atw across most of the rpm range. It's a conservative tune but it was an instantly noticeable improvement over stock. I had it fitted at an STi dealer and had the before and after dyno-but I had to ask for it and it is extra. From memory the dyno run cost about $100. As stated, it's plug n play, they do no adjustments when fitting.
Mainly went with this option to retain factory warranty as the car is leased, I have had previous experience with STi parts and always found them to be of excellent quality although a bit pricey, but I wasn't after a huge increase.Thru the forums I have learnt there are a few more options out there but I'd probably still have gone the same route. I can still sell it off second hand and recover some of the costs.
It's been in the car for about 10 months and has performed like a factory part should in a wide range of conditions, 40+ deg days, down the snow and track days without a problem, basically the same ECU tune fitted to the factory built MY06 LGTs tuned by STi

Having a Tuned by STI liberty, i can assure you the sti ecu is still very conservative. Much better gains both in torque and fuel economy are to be had with a custom tune.

I think it was only 10kw from memory, so barely noticeable.

I added a xcede ecu and alone it added about 20kw, well above the Sti ecu. It also has the flexibility to allow for other mods such as exhaust etc. The cost is about $700 more than the Sti unit, but it can be removed and sold later or used on another vehicle. The Sti runs about 130Kw on the dyno. A std 06 about 120. With the xcede and a full exhaust my car runs about 165.

Its horses for courses. If your not after big hp, then the Sti unit is okay, but if your after a more flexible approach, then an after market ecu or a reflash may suit your needs better.
