Difference between MT and AT dump pipe

Postby NTMID8 » Sat Jan 14, 2012 8:51 pm

Hi all,

Im new to this forum and Subaru's for that matter, i have owned powerful turbo vehicle's before (VL Calais Turbo - 304RWKW) and chose the Liberty for its sleek looks and good reviews. I have purchased a TBE of another forum member (2.5" Hitech with Hitech dump pipe) only problems is the dump pipe is for a MT and i have an AT. What is the difference between the two? Can the MT one be easily modified to suit the AT?

Im not looking to make huge power like my last vehicle but i find the vehicle "lacking" a little, it feels like it should be more responsive. I have read through countless other threads and figure a full exhaust, HKS filter, tune and possibly a new TMIC should transform the vehicle.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers

Ben

Welcome Ben
I think you'll find it's something to do with where it (the dump) bolts up to the respective trannys. However can't say whether or not there is a difference in the actual pipe itself. Perhaps someone else here might be able to explain in more detail :?
Having just done some simple mods & a tune myself I can tell you that there is far less lag now & she pulls much harder on boost now. Having had a VL b4 & been in some with much more power I can tell ya you won't get a lib to go anywhere near as hard with the stock vf48 turbo :( but hopefully quick enough to satisfy your right foot. I bought my car with the intention of keeping it stock but you know the old story.
Hope this helps
Nelson.

The Auto prefacelift MY04-MY06 and Manual actually have different turbos, so I believe Nelson that the reason there are two different versions from PHAT is because the turbo dump connection to the DP is different.
I can't imagine it being possible to make a modification like that by anyone to change it from an auto to manual, so you will have to resell it, but there are plenty of people with AT 2.0 GT's on this forum who are yet to experience the true power of the dark side of the PHAT GT force. :D

But if you want the real answer rather than just my hearsay, email forumparts@gmail.com (that's PHAT GT) and ask him yourself.

Welcome.

Dump can be modified to fit but it's more hassle than it's worth unless you're handy with mig.

Two areas of difference:

Turbo outlet flange is different for auto and manual. Autos use a vf38 and manuals a td04hla.

Second is positing of dump with respect to bellhousing and steering arm. This is an easy fix for an exhaust shop though.

Good luck with the car and 300kw isnt too hard with these things with the right mods and willgo much better than a vl with the same power

Can anyone supply pics of both the auto and manual turbo exhaust outlets? I have attached a pic of the dump pipe i have and cannot work out if its a manual or auto flange.

Cheers

Mate your questions have pretty much been answered -

Is yours a 2 litre or 2.5?

If 2 litre then the responses above apply

You will need to change the flange - that one you have posted is a manual one off the td04hla twin scroll

If you can weld or know an exhaust shop you need to have the flange cut off and a new one welded on to suit your turbo.

Also - the dump may foul on the steering knuckle and \ or the gearbox bellhousing

Here's a photo of the AVO downpipe for an auto 2.0T (VF38).
I haven't got a photo of a manual one.

Well given i posted in the 2ltr section you can assume its a 2ltr.

I understood the answers i was given however the picture ive added is from a manual STI and as you can see from the picture Tanglca added from an auto it would appear they are the same flange, unless the AT and MT are very very similar i am pretty sure the dump pipe i have will fit.

Thank you Tangcla for the picture.

The problem with photos like this is that it doesn't give a size reference - I suspect there *MAY* be a size difference. But I'm not sure. I have heard before that the TD04HLA is a bolt-on upgrade on the AT.

I was under the impression that the flanges were different bolt holes etc, i am starting to wonder if the STI model comes with different turbos

Sti model had the same turbo's as the base GT

ie td04hla for manual and vf38 for auto

The flanges are definitely different.

You may also have clearance issues with the bellhousing as the auto has a signifcantly larger bellhousing than a manual.

Hope this helps

Try bolting it up to see if it fits - its only eight bolts to get the dump off (five on turbo housing two on flange to exhaust and one to the exhaust mount to chassis underbody)

2.0GT M/T and A/T have the same flange but anything after the cat (first 1/3 of the dump) is totaly different

and same with the 2.5T , but different flange but both the A/T and M/T flanges are the same
