Hey Guys,

Was on my way to Newcastle today when the exhaust note changed noticeably. It was a lot heavier and louder, then 1 km down the, went to over take someone and "pppppeeeeeewwwwwweweeerrrrrrttttt" the turbo let go.
stuff all go and a massive bearing noise. End of story, car is on truck back home.

So this will be interesting to see what is wrong. Blown turbo = new one.
And begs the question, what do I replace it with.

we will see

Dropped the Lib at Subaru this morning for them to see what it is.
So if it is a Turbo (most likely) what should I do?
I am thinking replacement and then tune rather than change to different turbo.
So as far as I can tell from different threads. the stock turbo is the IHI VF38?
I have a friend who has access to Garrett turbos at cost price. Anyone know of a direct bolt on replacement? Just a thought.

Update: Car is being picked up from Subaru and taken to an STi specialist.
They will rip the turbo off tomorrow and they use GTpumps so it will be sent to them and a decision will be made soon.

The STi guy isnt subaru. he worked for STi rally for years. has his own shop now.

Should be relatively acceptable.

So, got the turbo off and to confirm, Yes it is an IHI VF38.
Its thrown an exhaust wheel and lost impellers off compressor wheel. Its shagged.
Getting a quote for a GTPS02, new front pipe, and Y pipe. Should be roughly around $2000.
Which is way lower than subaru @ $3500 from factory replacement.

Hopefully know tomorrow.

wow, here's some info:

Just was quoted $5,600 for factory subaru turbo...... ouch...

Then I was given an option of a rebuild to Ball bearing VF34 specs by MTQ = $2500 but still need front pipe.

Spoke to Bryce at Pulse and he recommends the CBRD BBK Turbos. getting a price now.

Direct bolt on no mods needed. and seeings he will be doing the tune, id rather get that fitted than something he doesnt recommend.
Which is what he said. Dont go near the VF34 rebuild.

As im not completely up to speed with Liberty turbo info, i feel in the middle and at the mercies of the two workshops....
anybody got any info, recommendations, light to shed on this subject?
Surely others have had the turbo blow?
