Just had to reply to this, wife's 04' GT wagon has had these symptoms for a couple of weeks, been to the mechanic twice who checked for vacuum leaks, and added some injector cleaner to try the basics first. Next step was to pull out the injectors and bench test them as it was showing no codes with the scanner, so figured it was something mechanical and not an o2 sensor etc.

Pulled out the solenoid's last night and sure enough the drivers side filter in the banjo bolt had collapsed and a piece had lodged itself in the solenoid preventing it from moving. Couple of flicks with a small screwdriver and a small tap on the concrete and it came out, which allowed the solenoid to move freely again. Put it back together and all is well!

Big thanks to all especially bucky and cruisn for the pics which gave me enough info to tackle it in the driveway.

Needless to say the wife is stoked but still wont hand over the cash she was going to spend on the injectors!!

Do 2.5L engines suffer from failed banjo bolt filters as well?

2.5 doesn't have variable cams and therefore no OCVs.

The filter isn't a serviceable item. You can replace the whole OCV though.

I should have asked: do 2.5T engines also suffer from failed banjo bolt filters? :D

I thought he meant 2.5 na

I think they removed the filters in the later model 2.5T. I've had a few foresters at work with the code but when I pulled them out they didn't have the filter, just blocked valve.

Yeh old oil build up causes the valve to stay open.

Ended up finding a vac leak on the waste gate actuator.
Symptoms were very similar as those described..

Just check the banjo bolts on the LH and RH inlet solenoids of my 05 GT (166K kms). To my surprise there were no filters present whatsoever...not even pieces of them. The car has only ever been serviced at Subaru (previous owner and major servicings while I've owned it) or I've done it myself. I haven't removed them so I assume they were removed by subaru? But wouldn't they fit new filters if it was part of a logbook service? I checked both servo spools for debris but they were both clean.... My car has similair symptoms as those in previous posts - won't idle smoothly and occasional hesitation from 2000rpm (usually in second gear) when cold. Thoughts anyone?

Some vehicles didn't have filters. The solenoid can still get dirty and blocked though. Probably needs a clean.
