Next Mod?

My MY04 auto GT is modded as follows -

AVO top mount intercooler
STI quad tip mufflers
ECU tune (done by Pulse Racing in Syd)

Wondering what next?

Any point doing the dump pipe without also changing the centre pipe and mufflers? Also wonder just how restrictive is the stock turbo and at what point do you hit its limitations?

Dump pipe seems like a no-brainer. Would this alone give me much more performance though or would it just make the car sound different?

Handing: Lower Control Arm Bushes (yours are probably stuffed if it's over 50k and never been done, the standard ones are pretty crap) + Sway Bars - that will change the car somewhat.

Intake: Add a HKS panel air filter too if you are still running a stock one. See Phat GT for best prices.

Dump pipe will be fine without centre pipe and a lot quieter, best bang for buck performance mod. Mufflers will be restrictive as the sti one's do not flow very well by design. Dump and mufflers are common mods here leaving the rest stock, some guys go to 3inch centres and change them back as they find it too loud, some don't care. Depends what you want.

Lower control arm bushes and swaybars are done, long time ago. I do need new springs & shocks (coilovers anyone) but that's a whole new thread.

Sounds like the dump pipe has value by itself. Would I need a re-tune to fully benefit?

Yes you'd need a retune for the downpipe. I have HKS downpipe, stock centre pipe and STi quads and it's good. I had the AVO downpipe before, and changed to HKS.

For handling, have you done swaybars, strut braces? I went all out and changed to alloy lower control arms as well as caster bushing, rollcenter adjuster and tie rod ends. It's about $1600 worth of lower control arms now! :P

Thanks mate.... So the HKS dump pipe is the way to go then. What's a good price?

I've done sways (front and rear), front strut brace and lower control arm bushes. All nice but now the springs and shocks need attention. Was thinking of KW V2 coilovers or the springs and shocks that Paul from Wheel Power has on offer.

Auto. Does the dump pipe differ for auto vs. manual?

+1

I am paranoid about replacing springs & shocks and ending up with a weird outcome like the front being higher than the back. Coilovers seem cool if for no other reason than their adjustability. Of course they cost $$$ and the ride may well be harsher. But the KW V2's seem to get a good wrap as far as harshness is concerned.

Back to my other mods. I did some searching and reading. Seems I should do something like this -

HKS panel filter (no-brainer)
HKS or PHAT dump pipe (which one?!)
Re-tune

and this should combine nicely with my AVO tmic, stock centre pipe and STi quads. I don't really have the willpower to change either the centre pipe or the mufflers.

What about the brake master cylinder thing? Worthwhile? Been ages since I looked into that. Wonder if that's still available?

KW are very comfortable. More comfortable with lowered springs on stock shocks.

I'd get the Phat one if he is still making them - the HKS is good but it's not double-the-money good.

You mean the Cusco brake master cylinder stopper? I have this too :P helps give better brake feel, for under $100 I think it's well worth doing.

You know, you should just sell your car and buy mine. It's got everything you want anyway.

Hi Phat,
New to the forum, just purchased my first Subaru a couple of months ago and looking to do a few mods if money allows me!! :)
Been looking around the forum for some time now trying to get some ideas for modifications and thinking air intake and exhaust could be first few options to improve performance. Could you tell me if the HKS Intake would fit in a 2.0R engine :?: Excuse my lack of knowledge with subies ill get there eventually :D
Cheers!
