So apparently a bolt on my tensioner failed. Mechanic that is looking at it and the original mechanic both agree that it is my problem, not related to the replacement of the belt at the 100 000km service. Claim that if it wasn't tensioned properly it would have broken a lot sooner than 3000km after the 100 000km service. I must be honest and say that I find this to be very hard to swallow. I don't see too many of these things with complete service histories requiring a rebuild at 110 000km. I really cannot say to much about the details at the moment, as I am overseas working and only have very vague technical details at hand, but I will be trying to get a hold of this bolt and let the metallurgists at work determine if it was over tensioned.
Ultimately, it looks like I am going to significantly out of pocket, and somewhat more importantly to the car enthusiast, I am never going actually enjoy this car. At this stage I think I will fix and sell, and (due to sheer emotion, not logic) never buy another Subaru product.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

It doesn't sound too good at all

The cam belt tensioners pretty much have to be replaced when you do a belt. If they don't replace it then they have to compress the tensioner back into its inner position. This procedure when done properly is supposed to take 5 minutes. Most workshops don't know this and they just reef it back into position with a big lever. Its a hydraulic thing and its ruined unless you take the full 5 minutes to slowly bring it back. When you buy one new it is supplied in the compressed state and you pull out a big pin to let it go once the belt it in position

I've seen this happen on my old car the guys at the workshop did it (now sacked) and the belt only lasted a while before it shit itself. If they haven't changed the tensioner now it will shit itself yet again LOL

Ask them how they managed to move the tensioner back when they put the belt on but don't mention a 5 minute period. See what they say then ask them what sort time it takes to compress it. Then mention 5 minutes

Hey guys...

Just on the topic.

Just done a timing belt service on my LGT 04 which had all the new pulley's, seals and auto-tensioner pulley... After fitted, now has a whining sound!!

My mechanic said it was just coz of the new belt having no slack at all and the new tensioner, creating a similar sound if you over tighten with the manual tensioner on some cars... After having a look, the belt was polishing the inside of the guide after a 1000k's done already... Re-adjusted the guide to give it the clearance but when put back and running again, it's still making the same sound??!! Sounds gone when idle but get's louder as the revs go up... Not overly loud but noticable when in a parking lot...

Any suggestions? Or could he be actually right?

Any info would be a great help
