What's the stock turbo?

Posts specific to the 2.0 litre Turbo engine

Sooooo...

Does anyone have a final answer on what turbo is on the EJ20T Auto?

I've got a chance to buy a TD04L (Off a EJ20T WRX / STI - I think) rather cheap. Trying to work out if it would be a upgrade or just a replacement?

Either way, I'll probably pick it up, but if it is an upgrade or it indeed turns out to be the manual turbo, then I'll be wacking it in right away :D

The WRX STI's use a VF series turbo. the TD04L comes standard on the rexxies I think (used to back in 99-2001), and I'm not sure if it's worth the bother as their fairly inefficient beyond 1 bar, and run out of puff fairly soon in the rev range - would be better to keep an eye out for a VF22/23/24/34 - you'd have to check if it bolts up to the lib though, but they were all used on the EJ20t's in the STI's and bolt up to the standard rexxies no problem.

TD04 was used in the GC8 WRX, not sure what the L denotes.

But Chris is right, now that he mentions it - VF-?? was used in the STis.

Actually I think you're right Mano :) was the twin scroll used in the granny tranny's as well? 8)

The TD04L was still used in the MY06 (pignose) rexxy as well from memory.

There's a listing on the net somewhere with what turbo is in what subaru - maybe on nasioc.

IHI VF42
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the JDM Subaru Impreza WRX STi S203 and S204. The VF42 features a twin-scroll design with a slightly larger compressor than the VF36/VF37 turbos and different turbine design (more blades). The VF42 is a roller-bearing turbo and is similar in size to the VF22 turbo, but the twin-scroll exhaust housing yields faster spool-up and a superior top-end.

IHI VF43
(250-325whp, Bolt-On)
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the MY07 USDM Subaru Impreza WRX STI. It can be found on both base STI's and STI Limited's. The VF43 utilizes a thrust bearing design and the P18 exhaust housing. The primary difference between the VF43 and the VF39 used previously on STI's seems to be the stiffness of the wastegate. The VF43 has a stiffer wastegate designed to reduce boost creep issues. Info
Expect to achieve full boost with the proper mods and a quality tune between 3000-3500rpms. 2002-2005 WRX owners will need fuel upgrades for this turbocharger and proper engine management is highly recommended for all vehicles that utilize this turbo aftermarket.

IHI VF46
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the USDM Subaru Legacy GT MY07. The VF46 utilizes a new five-arc scroll design to improve low and midrange performance over the previous VF40.

Ok, so TD04L doesn't sound like a good option as an upgrade or a spare.

But it would be nice to finally know what turbo's are on what Gen 4 models :D

Ok, so I'm guessing this is the turbo that is used on the pre-face lifted models (MY04-MY06) running a EJ20T:

IHI VF40
This is the standard equipment turbocharger used on the USDM Subaru Legacy GT. It can be found on all the current model years from 2005-2006.
Deadbolt Upgrade

But, this is not the same turbo that runs on the automatic is it? Pretty sure this turbo can be used as an upgrade on the auto's... Correct?

Just trying to get my facts straight so I know what turbo options I have.

Wait, that can't be right as the USDM only got the EJ25T... :(
