I don't suppose that lovely red STi inlet manifold would fit my rebuilt engine? Any disadvantages if it did - other than the extra weight of course...

Would there be any problem with painting mine whilst it's off? - I'm tempted now that I have an official 'modded STi engine' to do a bit more with the STi theming of the car ;)

Will require alot of rework (I mean alot including adapter plate for your drive by wire setup not to mention new sensors etc)

Not worth it in my opinion

I kept my plastic intake manifold when I swapped to a ej207

And yes I know the feeling of being compelled to represent the Sti brand :)

But don't...

Ok thanks... more advice taken gratefully :D - might paint the original part then...

... Too late! I'm an addict already... :? Perhaps I subconciously destroyed my old engine so I could get an STi one????

How urgent will the need to get the map checked be?

The mapper is a really nice guy... but so busy... :(

I am hoping to get the car back in the middle of next week - but he is booked solid until the Tuesday after that...

Will it be OK to drive with probably not the same compression ratio...

Will it need running in, since it is built from used parts?

Will take a LOT less timing so I would get tuned asap and stay off boost as much as possible!

Matt I think you've confused what Graphite is saying

His new setup will actually take alot more timing due lower compression ratio and better quench area due to new piston to deck height. But the ve tables will be all out so i wouldn't recommend driving it at all until tuned.

And no running in is required just make sure everything is done properly no leaks or loose fittings etc

Again - my strong advice would be NOT to drive until retuned. The temptation will be there once its up and running to give it a little squirt but don't even risk being tempted by this.

Regarding the plennum, the plastic one is lighter and less effected by heat soak. I remember phat saying they were good for 40 psi or something silly.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

Longer manifold runner length increases low speed torque, while larger diameter increases flow.

Easiest comparison is compare a VF48 converted 07 WRX to VF48 converted 08 WRX(yeah, done both) and the 08 won every time for low rpm torque and throttle response but the 07 WRX made slightly more top end power until heatsoak killed power after a few dyno runs :)

Whoop whoop - got a slot with the mapper on the 7th May - he says should be OK to drive 'normally' normally for whom I am tempted to ask... :)

I assume he means off boost and gentle... Also to check fluid levels everyday for a week or so...

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement guys

Well... good day in the end... :D

Arrived at CAMS (Darwen) to meet Andrew...

Image

Andrew engine checklight fault code and found it was a hard fault relating to the sensors for the AVCS - passenger side exhaust camshaft...

Image

Looked like the sensor had probably been knocked when the engine was lowered back in to engine bay and gone unnoticed... Fortunately Brian had loads of parts in the workshop Andrew determined that it was not the same part as early models... but suspected that it was the same as later 2.5 WRX - He cajoled Brian into letting us try one from a complete engine he is saving for a good sale...

Image

It fitted and worked when connected up to the gurus laptop and showed all the anticipated readings when tested

with everything eventually 'tickety boo' about 2 hours later we were able to set up the car for some road mapping... - and my car became a member of the Borg Collective

Image

Image

Image

Image

An interesting fault code appeared on the dash whilst the ECU was being flashed...

Image

The car felt great but then I have only been occasionally driving feeble 1.4 engines over the last month but Andrew says changing the NPS has allowed him to control the Inlet AVCS and add a bit of timing, with the STi 8 short engine he has felt confident to lean out the AFR a little and pull up the boost midrange too - so overall should be a solid increase in performance - a comfortable 320 (flywheel) with more in the midrange as well - but he won't commit to predicting any more than that but would like to see the dyno figures now... As would I

He has also promised to update us with some comments and hopfully some graphs of changes he has seen.

Big thanks Andrew 8)

Took the car on a motorway journey last week - flawless apart from one overboost / fuel cut incident... Feeling good :D

Got a dyno session tomorrow afternoon - will let you know how it goes

OK - got some dyno results to post - still waiting for the 'official printouts' ;) - please note FLYWHEEL bhp

Headline results of 334.3 bhp @6707 rpm (flywheel) and 332.3 lbft @ 3229 rpm (flywheel)

Here is a comparison I did to the other twin scroll Legacys from uklegacy forum...

Image

And here is one of the evolution of my motors power.

Image

First results from Prosport - with duff wastegate actuator :(
Second - with new wastegate actuator and map tweaking by teamCarr :)
Third with replacement NPS and extra preload on actuator as recommended by AndrewC
Fourth with STi8 short engine and 'proper mapping' session with AndrewC of teamCarr

Proudly bearing a new decal

Image

Thanks again AndrewC
